China has taken this seriously, but too late: have you seen the videos leaked out? a forced quarantine of 50M, hospitals at over capacity, they shut down their factories in the region. They require citizens in public to wear masks in spite of the shortage of them. They force citizens showing symptoms in public (presumably those who couldn’t get admitted to hospitals) to quarantine centers. They cremate verified victims from hospitals and those found on the street and in their homes. Supposedly, the dead found on the street and in their homes aren’t included in the official death tolls.

Their overcrowding might have contributed to the spread but it absolutely doesn’t mean we couldn’t have an epidemic here.

There is no way the media is co-opting this to go after the President. I hope that the COVID-19 doesn’t make a big impact in the USA, but based on what has occurred in China so far, we need to be concerned, and repeating conspiracy theories is not the way to respond.

What’s sad is that the political leadership here does not value human life over money and they will refuse to take the steps to prevent the spread that China eventually did.

I don't know if I agree with this. There is a lot of evidence that China initially tried to repress any information about this virus, because of those actions the initial death rate and spread was probably much higher than it could have been otherwise. We don't live in an authoritarian culture (thank goodness) and the government could never legally do what China ended up doing. Although, the media and social media are doing so much damage I do wonder if at times it would be worthwhile to control them, but obviously that is really dangerous in the long run.

Also, for better or worse, our society is making a "de facto" decision to significantly hurt the economy to reduce the risk to primarily the elderly and chronically ill. In a sense this becomes somewhat of a moral decision. Most of us will not get significantly ill and this virus poses little threat, the economic damage being done is long lasting to save people that already have high morbidity risk even without the virus.

I read that the economic pause in China has resulted in the equivalent of "6-months of carbon dioxide emissions of the UK" not being released into the atmosphere.

So it looks like those with political fringe theories will get their wishes in the short term, complete with a significant recession, food shortages and the divorces, suicides, unemployment, homelessness and social problems to go along with it.

If you don't have the money, then you shouldn't be having 3 kids and non-working spouse! This is part of what's called family-planning.
