Yea dude, losing your job in your 40s, not knowing when it’s coming back, facing the possibility of a recession, but having any real economic discussion hijacked by each “team’s” interpretation to smear the other in an election year and then watching the “adults” in the room ask you to choose between making race the only thing worth paying attention to in your life OR that our COVID stats compared to other first world countries have nothing to do with Mr Trump is not anything worth being upset about 🤨

I don’t know how you can talk about furlough estimates without talking about the current COVID situation in the US:

1. The US is severely lagging it’s Western piers. Reopening and forgoing masks will do nothing to change demand. Until the public feels safe traveling there will be massive furloughs.

2. The POTUS sets the stage and steers the course. His behavior and messaging on Covid has been worse than terrible. Lots of people hate him and lots of people love him. Whatever your opinion of Trump, the fact remains that he has botched this response and has led to instability.

3. Our inability to take even basic measures to improve our infection rate has resulted in the US traveler being shut out of canada, Europe, and more.

The US needs a cohesive federal response.

Quote: This is utter insanity. There are two mitigating strategies that work with this virus: social distancing and wearing masks. That’s it. That’s how other countries have suppressed the virus and begun to reopen their economies. Achieving herd immunity before we have a vaccine would be too devastating to consider as a possibility.
People keep saying “the virus only has a 1% mortality rate”. That neglects the law of large numbers. It also assumes that only one of two things happen: you die or you’re 100% healthy. The U.S. has a population of 328.2 million (approx.). If 1% of the population dies, that’s roughly 3.28 million people dead. 3 million people dead would monkey wrench the economy no matter what. That more than doubles the number of annual deaths per year all at once. The second bit is people only talk about deaths. Also, and this is important, for ever 1 person who dies, roughly:
- 19 more require Hospitalization.
- 18 will have Permanent Heart Damage for the rest of their lives.
- 10 will have Permanent Lung Damage.
- 3 will have Strokes...
- 2 will have Neurological Damage that leads to Chronic Weakness and Loss of Coordination.
- 2 will have Neurological Damage that Leads to Cognitive Function.
This all adds up to:
- 3,282,000 People dead.
- 63,358,000 Hospitalized.
- 59,076,000 People w/ Permanent Lung Damage.
- 32,820,000 People w/ Permanent Heart Damage.
- 9,846,000 People w/ Strokes...
- 6,564,000 People w/ Muscle Weakness.
- 6,564,000 People w/ Loss of Cognitive Function.
The choice is not, “ruin the economy to save 1%.” If we reopen the economy, IT WILL BE DESTROYED ANYWAY! The U.S. economy cannot survive with everyone getting COVID-19.
This isn’t a media problem. This isn’t a political problem. This isn’t a public hysteria problem. This is a pandemic, and we know how to suppress it. We have a blueprint, laid out by other countries that have successfully suppressed the virus.
As has been said, there are many issues that a vaccine won’t help with: different strains, mutations, public confidence, anti-vaxers etc. What will help? Those two mitigation strategies that other countries have used to suppress the virus to the point that they have started to reopen their economies.
Wear your mask. Tell others to wear their mask. Socially distance yourself. Tell others to socially distance. Listen to the CDC and experts in epidemiology. And hope we start getting this advice from the federal government.
Your posting facts and stats on a pilot forum...good luck. Its its all fake news...UAL is not laying off 36k employees. nothing to see here. Also we did not have a 10% increase in the death rate in america few months back. Masks do not work...they only work for every other country on the planet.

going to be ok
how do you mean? Like in the “first world” way, where realistically Most UAL pilots probably have a network or some skill they can fall back on to make sure they have a roof over their family’s head?

i feel extremely fortunate to not have received a WARN yet and to have a family network that could help if need be, but not everyone has that, and often through nothing other than bad luck.

sure, if you’re under 60 you’re statistically likely to not die from this, but if having your life Completely upended And wondering how your family life will look in 6 months makes you upset deserves a “chill pill” ...

if any of us flew with someone who was going through something this bad, independent of the entire country, we would be floored and would offer any emotional support we could to that person… Yet some people have just totally put the blinders on and refuse to acknowledge the impact this is having on others.

what federal “response” is missing?

No, that's the states' lane. Perhaps you'd like United management to tell you exactly how to fly your aircraft.

FAA sets how you can fly so everyone is on the same page

that’s because the Federal Government controls the national airspace... but they don’t control whether a state is under quarantine or not...
