Soon after that, FedEx really got started. With quite a few of our old planes. DC-10's, and pretty much the whole 727 fleet. I could also mention UPS buying a whole bunch of DC-8-71's, same plane UAL had just gotten rid of....

But still, a bright spot. I have also done quite a few cargo flights. I do like them.
Fedex was pretty established prior to the strike with a growth rate probably 30-40% annually through the 80’s. in fact hitting 1 billion in revenue in 1983. They had a fleet of 727 prior to our strike from eastern ual air canada and I think lan chili. They also had 200 series brand new from boeing.
I remember Ferris saying that and I agree I like our Cargo here but back then Ual would never have competed with fedex. IMO

FedEx and UPS are global shipping companies that use airplanes to feed the trucks, not freight airlines. If United got back into the dedicated freighter game our competition would be Atlas and Kalitta, not purple or brown. They are two different worlds and there is money to be made in both, but only if your cost are in line with your competition. I wish that it was different. I’d much rather fly a 777 freighter than passengers for the same money.

In theory only. We haven’t sent out any additional WARN letters or official furlough notices...... yet. Everyone is going to be smaller for a while, but it’s just a guessing game as to who cuts the most.

Just out of curiosity, how much cargo (weight) are you guys carrying on one of your cargo trips?

Don’t know. We don’t get a LR just the final weights.

You've never been curious and subtracted the BOW and the FOB just to roughly guess?
