I am hearing from the "Technical Operations side" that it is "Full steam ahead" for Polaris mods on the PW 777 when they come due for maintenance. I highly doubt if ETOPS was in question that UA will be pressing on with the Polaris project.

I’ve also heard that there are 3 different PW issues:
1. Uncontained fire
2. Cowlings coming apart
3. Fan blade… lately lots of focus on this, and yes it appears that the fan blades will all be fixed by next summer.
However, the larger issue that I’ve heard is that because of 1-2-3, the PW 777’s ETOPS future is in jeopardy. So even though there’s a timeline to fix all the fan blades, I think there’s still some uncertainty regarding the types of trips the jets will actually fly.

You lose ETOPS certification for an airframe/engine combination when the ISFD exceeds a certain FAA threshold or the airline has several ETOPS critical system failures in a certain time period. The airline is not penalized if the engine manufacturer is at fault

They are converting 5 777-200B's to cattle car configuration. 1 has already been done. This configuration is a huge money maker. Adds a lot of seats. Doesn't do much for pax comfort. Domestic, Hawaii, and Guam. They will also use them to fight off LCC's. Can't really compete with seat mile costs with the A configuration.
