Do you guys think United cares more about PIC time or a larger type rating? I'm a low time regional FO wondering if I should stay and try and upgrade, or try and go to a ULCC and try and get an A320 or 737 type. Any ideas which would get me to United first? Of course I could just apply to United without either but I don't think I'd be competitive.

FWIW. I mentor several pilots and provide career counseling. One the pilots I mentor just got a CJO at UAL. 2500 total time. No 4 Year Degree. Left Commutair after 700 hours for Frontier and on the line for 6 months for about 300 hours. NO PIC Time. He definitely did much better then staying at a Commutair waiting for flow through.

I got an interview later in the month, Im at 2100 total time but over 1200 multi-engine turbine time. I'll give an update on whether I receive a CJO or not. Can't see why not, from what I'm hearing if you have an interview; United already wants you unless you mess it up somehow. I have multiple friends who were hired, one with 2300 hours and the other 2400, no degree and no military.

I think the only requirement is ATP, heartbeat and the ability to put a sentence together. Good luck.

I’ll remember reading this when you boys eventually have one of these Frontier zero to hero new hires bend metal, hopefully not sacrificing human life in the process.

This thread is an absolute embarrassment. I can’t believe what I’m reading. United’s “hiring department” prioritizing picking candidates from their competitors, no matter the flight time and credibility, over hiring quality candidates with some Turbine PIC on the resume is shocking. I would expect to read this in a low cost carrier thread.

Those same zero to hero pilots are going to Delta too.

I’m sure this has been asked but if you have under 1000 121 should you wait to apply or still apply regardless. My friend is like 250 away

121 is not a requirement, so yes, apply. A large portion of every class has zero hours of 121 time.

This assumes that the rest of the time is of something comparable (135, mil, 91k)

You’re misinformed. The rare delta hires with zero Turbine PIC meet very high standards in their academic background. No degree with 2100 hours total time and 1,000 of that being right seat time ain’t cutting it. That’s the definition of a scrub hire.

I’m willing to bet that zero to hero pilot was at commutair BECAUSE they had no 4 year degree. The kid probably couldn’t get an interview invite at the top regionals. I want you to think about that one for a second.

He’s at a regional and has over 2k hours. I mean idk where you’ve been but it’s not unusual for the legacies to hire zero to hero pilots now. I’m one of them “low tier zero to hero” pilots with no PIC or degree and did DL and UA so they’re definitely still pulling those types of apps.
