I’ve flown with several FO’s who are senior to me who do it. By bidding with LCA’s they can maintain control of their schedules and still make more than they could as a captain considering that premium flying has dried up. They get first pick on vacation, they’re always off for holidays, and it’s their decision to either chase time off or money. Having 2 trips a month bought and picking up equal time earns them more than a captain flying their published line. It’s not always consistent, but for those who are senior enough and willing to game the system, there isn’t a good reason to upgrade. The WB guys senior enough to do the same really make a killing.

I made over 300k in w2 income in 2019 as a 320 FO. 2X the Fo rate is a lot more than the captain rate. If you can get rid of your straight time stuff and pick up premium pay and soft time, you can make way more as a lineholding Fo than a Captain that doesn't trade their trips at all. Obviously a Captain that's a sharp trader will make more than an Fo that's a sharp trader, but an Fo that's a wolf can outdo a Captain that's a sheep.

Why would there be a mass exodus from TX to FL? IAH is similar enough to most of Florida with a comparable climate, near the ocean, politics, and no income tax. I understand people in EWR, ORD and DEN bailing to Fla, but why from IAH?

likely because many people commute from florida to IAH

You really think that having “wolves and sheep” is the best way to structure our pay system? I personally don’t, and think it’s the antithesis of what’s being in a union is about. We shouldn’t have to be computer whizzes, upa sharp shooters, or know an LCA in order to prosper, as it pits us against each other. Again, just my opinion.

Hi all,
Looking at potentially transitioning to the airlines from mil in two years, and am interested in being based in Texas (I'm from DFW, the wife is from Houston). Initially I thought SWA might be the way to go, but recently it seems like United is growing and getting much better very quickly. I'm primarily leaving the military due to some QOL issues, while the wife would have another few years on her contract due to our age difference. Ultimately, I think we'd like to end up in Houston, but how senior is IAH for United, and what kind of flying goes on there? Still trying to find out how to best get similar info, but my search skills seem to not yield what I'm looking for.
Cheers!
