Default What is WB Reserve Like?

Curious as to what one can expect sitting 777/787 reserve? Obviously come august sounds like you can realistically expect the six short call conversions as well as landings every 90 days but as the plug how often are you really getting assigned something, anything - literally anything at all or is it not much more than short call conversions and the occaisional repo?

It's going to differ a lot between airplanes seats and base. I haven't gotten an assignment yet in 2024.

reserve in base like any fleet isn’t bad. Commuting, you’d probably get a few short calls a month in quite month (my guess is max 5 in quiet months), honestly a lot of locals pick up the short calls to reset order and make extra money. In summer I flew 15-17 days a month, in the shoulder months, I haven’t flown in almost 3 months. I sit reserve during the week, lineholders are picking trips up. For my WB base a lot of trips are commutable , minus some Hawaii and Japan. As most people on here say,
bid 737 , learn the bidding / reserve rules and then move up.

This is not even a choice but rather the way it is now. WB has gone back to being senior enough that you will be on NB one or more years before getting awarded WB in a vacancy.

To anser the OP, reserve on the WB is not bad at all, especially in base. If you want to fly you can APU ("Agressive Pick Up") trips and fly a couple times a month. Going to landings class is a given unless you are in a base with a healthy amount of domestic trips like SFO 777. Even then it is probable unless you try to pick up domestic flying.

How long would it take to get SFO 787 for a new hire? Thanks!

The last super junior pilot to get it in a vacancy award was back in October. That was probably an August or September hire. Subsequent vacancies have gone several thousand numbers more senior.

Currently 787 in SFO and haven’t been assigned a trip since October. I do pick up anywhere from 5-8 SCs a month since I’m in base, but ever since November with some implementation of the new reserve stuff there’s been far less SCs each day, only about 3 per day now. That may pick up over summer but for the most part the reserves are usually so stacked that as long as you pick up one SC at the beginning of your silo you can put yourself low enough in FIFO to not get assigned any more than one or two days of SC. Very rarely see any SCs for those in 2 or 1 day Silos, and I think 3 total FSBs in my time here. YMMV but for the most part it’s the best deal at United by far.. as far as reserve goes!

Wb reserve is the best job at the company, unless you get used more than once in a month. It's the worst job ever when you get called for a trip that has the corresponding break schedule totally opposite of what your home body clock. Ie, you get tagged as a bunky for the early SYD from SFO. Then you don't sleep at all, or minimally, becuase at home you're a night owl going to bed at 2am. In those instances you will hate your life and immediately bid a line next month if you're senior enough. Odds of results better in the shoulder months. Wb LHs can also make way more money, reserves usually stuck at min guarantee plus the SC money.
