Pardon the thread drift...

Is there any rhyme or reason to UA's registration number selection?

it’s the way CO wanted it. I also have no idea why they did it that way.

From a pilot/seniority/hiring perspective, I actually see that as good news for us. Keep the aircraft coming (albeit at a slower than planned delivery schedule) rather than wait around for the MAX10.

It’s not what the airline wanted for United Next, but as long as we have planes coming that need to be staffed, pilots shouldn’t really care what they are.

Seems to be some recycling going on. N37530 and a bunch of other Max 9s are carrying N-numbers from the DC-6 fleet

In the days of Cal the numbers actually made sense. If you take the last 3 digits of the tail number and put a 0 there it was either a DC 10 ...777 or a 764
the number 1 was for the 757-200. 8 for the 757-300 7 for the 737-700 2 for the 737-800 3 for the 737-300 and so on. So there was a method behind the madness.
now I'm not so sure?
