CA wings are the same, you get them after you’ve done the “charm school”. Couple days of kool-aid and some more DISC modules.
The wings themselves…..are given well before there’s been any “earning” of them. Having said that…you earn all that stuff in the weeks to follow, or you never get to use them. But the wing thing is just a photo-op and a chance to let your loved ones celebrate you a little.
When I was at SWA we literally got them the night before Day 1 at a little shin-dig they put on for everyone starting class

For my regional we had to practically build the plane. For my current, we had a “conversational” oral but were required to know “memory items” verbatim (and still are at each recurrent).

Are you suggesting they used to give out wings and so forth without making sure the trainee had actually earned them??

Aside from the major whoosh, the hard part is getting the job. You earn the wings getting + passing the interview. If you fail in training you should not have been at your previous job either.

At the wing ceremony is also a binding agreement not to be a social media pilot influencer.

No boiler plate Tik Tok/Insta reel titled My Day Flying;

getting out of bed, buttoning shirt
Pic of jet from terminal we’ve seen a million times
video entering cockpit
JEPPFDPro screenshot of the entire route
throwing hat onto hotel bed
food pic
narcissistic selfie
layover landmark like Golden Gate Bridge or Eifel Tower
Walk thru Terminal behind Boomer Capt who didn’t consent to being in your media empire production.

Also cringe hostage audience PAs at the gate or galley. So cool you are United’s first [insert obscure baseball style statistic demographic] and your path to United was an amazing trauma journey (2000TT) but the FA just wants to reclaim her workspace and install the girt bar.

Why is a "wings ceremony" even a thing? What are you flight attendants?

I tend to agree, furthermore it seems strange occurring when it does. Considering the only achievement is arriving on time, crossing Quebec Street, and passing an open book test.

As we do know there are people who don’t make it through their fleet training………………….to have that happen after the Wings ceremony

As someone mentioned earlier, the achievement is making it to what many consider the pinnacle of aviation jobs. Also noted is the fact that it’s the last time you’ll all be together, and a good time for families to honor you. Don’t overthink it too much. If you bust out of training, just sh!T can the wings.

it's just a job flying airplanes. It's not that difficult or that big of a deal.
It's not like becoming a doctor or astronaut. Lots of people think a little too highly of themselves.
Does amtrak have a whistle ceremony for their engineers?
