So the arm chair experts on APC agree a mistake happened, and if they were in the same situation they simply would never have made a mistake. Brilliant analysis! Maybe let's just hold off on the complete speculation until the investigation and facts of the matter comes out.

Used to happen all of the time at DFW. Especially if there was a rwy change.
It usually involved certificate action, even with ASAP.

Yeah, departing on a rwy that alternates between a regional of your left side and departing on your runway. What's your departure? For decades - 500' (?), and a slight right turn towards KOAK.Climb and maintain 8000'? Forgive me if I've forgotten the basic SFO departure in the last decade.
The guy on 01L was either in position and/or cleared for takeoff right after you were.
This isn't some unusual day at SFO, it's Ground Hog Day 12,682+ 95% of the time.
Having a BASIC concept of what you're going to fly on departure isn't some advanced skill...especially if there's a guy chasing you on your left.

This. If a runway change is put into the box, you must verify the SID and transition is loaded properly. If I remember correctly, I’ve had a runway change from 1L to 1R which changed not only the SID but the flap setting (WN 737).

I believe all fleets have some sort of “runway change” guide in their FM. May seem like overkill, but I use it to make sure we didn’t miss something. Especially on the third leg of the day.

This is smart. I always have my FOs pull it up if we change any sort of runway or performance. We've all been there. Something you think you didn't miss, you missed. I think this is prudent.

SImple SOP (stolen while riding a regional jumpseat) - "rwy xx under my ass, rwy xx on the glass." Yeah the training department, and legal beagles, don't care for it but it's fairly fool proof.
Basic departure path should be known. Nothing like the old days when the FMC's would randomly dump. Gear up, flaps up....FMC's go blank.... How fast can you type???? Of course life is simple....just ask departure for vectors. Good luck in South or Central America or the non radar mountain cities out west, you're on your own. Type fast.

I’ve flown into SFO as a pax a few times, never as crew. If I’m not mistaken, the ops that day were parallel takeoff on the ones and parallel landings on 28. Is this common and what kind of Charlie Fox ensues if the crew asks for a short delay while they re-program the box? One other thing, is SFO the place where the ATIS mentions the possibility of last minute rwy changes on the departure?

Turn the damn thing off if you are not going to use it.
Pro tip.: If you are used to not flying it, one of these days the FD will say:
” hey Mr Pilot,….there goes the localizer”
And you’ll miss it. But thats just me….
