Today, August 7, 2012, the SSC held its monthly conference call and there were a number of items discussed. *Some of this had been considered confidential material until the L CAL SSC chairman released it to their pilots. *Understand that there is a confidentiality agreement between the company and our SSC members and this information should have been allowed to be released by both SSC’s at the same time but it wasn’t. *The company has agreed to make sure from this point on, that both sides will release future information at the same time to both pilot groups.
I can not stress enough that everything is subject to change. *Keeping that in mind, here is what we were told is the most current plan for the near term.
Regarding the recent order for 737-900’s, there is good news and bad news. *The good news is that the 50 orders, and 50 options are intended as L UAL aircraft. *The bad news is that they are going to be used as replacement aircraft for our 757 fleet. *Between now and August of next year, we may see as many as 8 757’s retired. *Starting August 2013, for every 737-900 delivery taken, we will park a 757. *Initial deliveries will be approximately two per month, later increasing to between 30 and 40 per year. * Along with this, the company is planning to hold on to 15 757’s for PS service and will upgrade both the cabin and cockpits to the L CAL standards and 28 lie flat seats.*
Most of you already know that the entire 2 class group of 767-300’s are going through upgrade to a 2 class international configuration. *This will include an entire new cabin, significant cockpit upgrades, and winglets. *Currently one reconfigured 767 is flying and it will be joined by three others by mid August. *These planes are planned to be flown primarily out of IAH and EWR to European destinations.
L CAL has approximately 16 767-400’s and although we are not going to be flying them any time soon, these planes will be used in the EWR/IAD to Europe markets. *Approximately 4 of them are currently in a high density configuration but this will be changed to match the others.
Airbus fleet is not expected to see any changes until possibly when the 737 Max deliveries start.
787 deliveries are supposed to start in September, if all goes as planned. *This may be delayed but the company is hoping it will hold. *Actual in service date will be Nov 4 if all goes well. *Before that, we can expect it to be flown in domestic markets and on proving runs doing non revenue flying. *Its initial international operations will be between IAH and AMS. *More on future segments later.*
400. *Currently there are no changes planned for the 400. *There are currently 24 active in the fleet, including one doing AMC charter work. *Of the 23 other aircraft, 2 will be maintained as spares. *The only minor change expected is that the HKG SIN tag will return to this fleet.
777. *This one is also a biggie and still has a lot of unknowns. *Many of you may have read the L CAL SSC report that stated LAX NRT and LAX PVG would be transitioned to the 787. *This information was previously company confidential and has now been released. *In the first quarter, LAX NRT is planned to transition to the 787, while LAX PVG is planned for the third quarter. **
Currently there are no plans to surplus any of the LAX pilots and the SSC understands that we in no way want to become an 8L6 domicile. *As for the unknowns, next summer’s flying for this fleet is still up in the air. *We have been relied upon to cover tag flying out of NRT, and without us, that may be difficult to accomplish. *We may see LHR turn into a W to an unknown destination. *We may see HNL flying return. *We may also see some domestic flying. * How is L CAL going to get 2 sets of crews from IAH to LAX to cover these trips as well as another to Denver to cover that flight to NRT. *Right now no one knows and everything is subject to change.*
I also posed a question to the SSC about Boeing making the 787 a common type with the 777. *Although this is really not in the purview of the SSC, it was noted that even though Boeing has certified it, UAL doesn’t have the authority to use it. *I expect that there might be fences precluding L UAL pilots from flying the 787 for a while, but it was a thought considering the above.
We also discussed that we should expect to see a significant reduction in block hours affecting *flying till summer. *It won’t be a large draw down but it will most likely delay the recall of pilots. *Again, summer is still an unknown and when things get more concrete, it may change plans. * *
Personally, the lack of long range plans is frustrating and disappointing. *Hopefully these will gel before too long and we can plan out part of our futures.*

Am I missing something here or is an Alpa rep recommending to management that they combine two fleet types into one? Talk about short-sighted! Two fleets equals more pilots, Einstein. While there may be fences in the short term, it's to everyone's benefit long term that we keep the 787 it's own type.

If i were older and a medium senior-very senior capt at a regional, i couldnt justify coming to ual. I truly believe they will furlough again. Just need some pilots to get them thru the summer of 2013 and maybe '14. Yeah i didnt believe it either, back in 07. We were hired to get them thu the summer of '08.
You might want to jump in here;

I've got some bright eyed bushy tailed LCAL dude jumping all over me for stating the exact same thing.
Check out post 8 and 10 then move forward.

Airhoss, ual can park as many planes as they want, anytime they want. they've proved that how many times? and they've already stated they are parking the 757's 1 for 1 for 737 deliveries and only keeping 15 for PS. so thats what 80 ish planes ---- i dont see how retirements and replacement aircraft ( not growth) will not result in a furlough as of today's date. the positive manpower of retirements, doesnt negate the negative manpower of the 757 parkings. Unless there is actual growth, a future furlough in 1-3 years, is a high probability. just my honest opinion--- just dont take the job thinking it's secure... fool me once shame on you... fool me twice--shame on me-- and there will be people who get fooled a third time too. sad.
