Whoa now! Saying stuff like that around here could get management to take notice and have you "randomly" tested for being on something.

Does that pay bump create a safer environment? Didn't think so.

It might. Could affect CRM (or C/L/R). Being ****ed that the pilot next to you is making 1.5 x the pay you are, and YOU are PIC?
But if you are both making the same for that trip (leg), might be a little smoother...

Absolutely! If I got paid 50% more I'd be able to fly one third less hours for the same W2 as I get now. The last 10 years we've lost the pay and retirement battle so you've got guys flying FAR max month after month, coming to work sometimes tired, sometimes sick, and sometimes just worn out.

Pay is directly linked to QOL and QOL to safety. The MBAs have successfully convinced a generation of pilots that there is no connection between pay/QOL and safety, that a contract is primarily about the pay scales on page 53.

It's not. It's about safety, first and last. And that safety is arrived at by putting into a contract the appropriate pay and QOL so that when we arrive at the plane we are at our best.

Lorenzo figured this out in the '80s, did the opposite, and CAL dragged the entire industry down for 30 years. Pay less, work harder. There have been three 777 captains stroke out in the last three weeks, one right in the jetway [correction: three pilots, grave medicals, one in customs]. It takes a toll.

Let's hope we get it all back in this round.

CAL. Flying 10% more than UAL (or any other major) for years on end, with less rest, often min rest.

Not to mention CAL captains expiring in flight. Could only find links to two, but I believe there have been at least four in recent years,

3 777 Captains had strokes in the past 3 weeks? I didn't hear about any of those. I heard about 1 737 captain and it was in security and not a stroke.

You're right, one was a 737 captain and it was going through customs (not on jetway--my mistake), James Braddock Tripson Obituary: View James Tripson's Obituary by The Courier of Montgomery County. Two others (777 pilots, not on duty) were spoken of in the weather room by an ops supervisor. Fortunately, these two survived but their flying days may be over.

Thanks for smacking that one out of the park. Some need a bigger flashlight.

"Does that pay bump create a safer environment?"

Only if there is a reduction in max hours, no overtime and no ability to P/U.

If the pay is raised 100% most of those who P/U will figure since they are working OK now at these hours why should they stop.

Personal opinion. Some will drop their hours but most will use the "opportunity" to make more, you know the "entrepreneur spirit" and such.
