Quote: Told you months ago all you guys would love the "GUPPY" After how you have bad mouthed it you better watch out for bad karma!
Notice how many displaced 747 F/Os took guppy captain bids. If you are stuck in the right seat of the 76T making min pay On reserve the guppy left seat makes sense. If you are a line holding 777 or 400 F/O it's a fairly large pay cut to go jr as a guppy captain.

Simple math my friend.

Latest snapshot is definitely a majority 777 FO esp IAD taking up EWR 737 Capt slots. Guess being a capt (even on the lowly guppy) is worth this paycut you speak of Hoss.

Not really ... when they closed the LUAL 777 base ... most of them bumped to DCA and commuted from the JFK area to DCA. I'll bet most have grown weary of the commute.

I'm not seeing the math. Latest contract shows a 12 year guppy CA at $205/hr and a 777 FO at $174. Even a guppy CA making min reserve (73 hrs) is $1000/month more than a 777 FO with an 85 hr line. What am I missing?

Not trying to be a jerk just trying to follow the logic.

Quote: Thanks for the corrections guys! I should read slower huh :-) Just hoping to get on with United before the hiring does stop. Thanks again!
Just curious and not trying to bust your bubble or anything, but why, with the other good choices out there would anyone choose to come to this company? You can read, and you have certainly talked to people who are here now. How does ANYTHING you read or hear make you want to work here? I've been here 25 years and nothing EVER gets better, it only gets worse. The management of this company is as bad or worse than ever, and no matter what these morons do, they do it badly. The "culture" if you call it that, it toxic. Maybe not as bad as US Airways, but not by much. When you come to work here, it feels like the life is being sucked out of you. The "system" does not work and everything is a battle - from the moment you check in until the moment you drive off the property at the end of your trip. CSRs and Flight Attendants mostly hate pilots and they make no effort to hide their hatred. Management hates pilots and again, they make no effort to hide their contempt. Retirees are treated like sh*t and "benefits" have to be wrestled from the company. If you call in sick, you are treated like a criminal, and too many sick calls gets you on "tracking" and again, treated like a criminal. Granted, where else you find a job that, once you get to a decent level (Captain), you can make a pretty comfortable six figure income, but that comes at a cost.

Wouldn't Southwest, Alaska, or Delta be a better option?

Again, just curious. Why would anyone purposely throw themselves into this cesspool? Frankly, I can't wait to get out.

Educate me.

Of course if you can hold a line on the guppy (lowly if that makes you happy) or you can skip the commute it makes sense.

Hill, I see your math, but...here is a hypothetical situation with worst case numbers to make my point.

If you look at the pay per day. It breaks down differently.

Reserve 737
$205/hr x 73 hours = $14965 per month, but you are only guaranteed 13 off in 31, so $14,965/18 days = $831/day

Line 777
$174/hr x 70 hours = $12180 per month, but you are away 12 days, so $12180/12 days = $1015 per day

On an hourly or annual basis, you make less. However, on a pay/day worked basis, you can make more on 777.

Now for the real kicker, lets say you add a 4 day/20hour 777 trip. You are still working only 16 days, but that would add $3480 to the make total monthly pay $15560.

A statistician can make the numbers say whatever you want, but it all comes down to what's more important to you.

If you are tired of the view (if you aren't lead dog, the view...) the 737 is there.

If you don't mind the view, the 777 pilot sees some cool places including home...lots more.

Makes sense. Thanks.

Why? Because I've spent 14 years at a regional. Go do that in the current "concessions-or-bust" environment and you'll have a different outlook.
