Jim...the 737 flying out of Newark is great. There's a little bit of everything in there. I did the commute by car for 18 months out of Baltimore area and it was generally easy. Driving from Albany is going to be a piece of cake.

DEN Scenario:
Get hired get the 320/737 and sit on it for a year. Upgrade to the 756 sit there for 2 years. Upgrade to the 777 sit there until your seat lock is up (2 more years). Take the 50K pay cut to go back to 320/737 in DEN and sit bottom reserve for 2 years. get your first line in DEN and then upgrade to CA in EWR the very next month in EWR. Sit as narrow body CA for 10 years upgrade to the 756 as CA (or equivalent). sit there for another 10 years and make the decision to upgrade to 777 CA or DEN 737 CA and give up 100K a year. If you pick DEN your golden if you pick the 777 you will retire spending a grand total of 30 years at UA with 2 of them based at DEN and all of them as a reserve FO.
I'm probably going to move........

Pilotgolfer (and others) - Thank you so much for your reply in this and my other thread. We live in NoVA right now and are trying to decide to stay put for a while (and hope to get IAD soon) or move to upstate NY. Albany has the edge after yours and the other responses. And I've read a bit about the great 737 flying from EWR. It's great to have choices (20 yrs in AF before this!). I'm really looking forward to the new life! Thanks again.

Most A320 positions will be concentrated in just four of the seven hubs, SFO, DEN, ORD and IAH. While EWR, IAD, and LAX have 320s, they are smaller and will remain so. So much smaller that a majority of 320 flights into or out of EWR, IAD, and LAX are operated by 320 pilots based at other hubs. 737s are more evenly distributed.
So if you want a EWR, IAD, or LAX base, and don't want to be on reserve for an extended period, you will do better on the 737. If you don't care about being on reserve for a while, then you're back to the nice office vs nice layover decision.

Not sure about the other two, but for DCA, the 320 is a larger category as compared to the 737, with more hours and more pilots.

Not supposed to stay that way though, 737 is supposed to expand in DC some , A320 supposed to shrink some and more importantly the DCA 320 trips are supposed to be more evenly distributed out to BWI and DCA starts and ends.

For example, in June there were only 15 trips the whole month on the Airbus that started in BWI. For July its around 73 trips for the whole month.
The 737 had 43 trips in BWI for June and 70 trips for July.
Unless you are senior, don't expect to get a pure line of BWI flying, if any at all.

It's hard to say how many "lines" there are out of BWI because of PBS and the monthly ebb and flow of what fleet flies the trips from there.

I had a different experience with BWI than what you describe. Granted, this was back in 2007 when I was a new hire and the trip trading was actually useable. I flew almost exclusively out of BWI with an occasional trip out of DCA. I can count on one hand the number of times I had to go out of Dulles.
At that time, BWI would be available for junior guys. We had a group of 7-8 captains and a similar # of FOs that would all fly out of BWI. I flew with the same dudes most of the time.
I'm not sure this would be possible today...it's just to hard to trade trips unless the days match up perfectly.

BWI is a hub for SWA and a mere hub extension for UAL of which IAD always seems to be on and off life support. So many more variables in making a career choice l between SWA and UAL.
