And you summed up short call. I recently filed a PDR over short call. I had a nice email exchange with a systems schedule committee/crew desk rep. I'm narrow body on 320. Yes the short call abuse is rampant and from the unions perspective, this was never envisioned for short call. The company consistently runs a 10am short call your first day on reserve and several others after this simply to get you on the short leash in the domicile. And as many others have said(to include my own personal experiences) they consistently release you early only to put you on another short call assignment the next day. It's all legal and quite convenient for the crew desk. I actually had a discussion with a crew desk supervisor about the rabid use of short calls. His response, "we're short pilots so we use short call."
And they love to do a 0200 or 0300 your last day as well. When there's no flying or less(as there is now) the SC's are every where. They're even doing field standby's with all the SC. All legal. Something I hope we can change. The problem, so few on reserve that it's hard to get momentum in large numbers to change this.

As I stated earlier on another thread;
1. ALL SC's used to be published around 0900 and all were assigned by noon(ish). If you didn't get one, you were either flying or LC on day one of a string. Made commuting easy and predictable. Now they will call in the evening and assign you a SC which begins in 13 hours.
2. Day one guys almost NEVER got a SC. It was designed that way to ease the hassle of commuting to reserve. Day last guys only got them when they were really short, like summer. The rest of the time, your last day of RES was either flying or (usually) LC. NICE.
3. Once assigned a SC, that was it. None of this "now we want you to come sit at the airport on FSB" after you've already burned into 7 hours of a 0200 or 0300 SC. Or, "you've been been released and are now assigned to fly IAD-SFO tonight at 2200". Uh, no.
4. FSB's used to cost them 5 hours. They were not handed out like skittles.
I could go on and on. Reserve didn't use to be such an onerous existence.
To a far greater extent than I have seen in most of my career, this used to be an industry in which the old guys pulled for the young guys and fought to keep medieval crap like I posted out of the CBA. It would be nice if we could leave this place in better shape than what we have today. Sooner or later, the vast majority of pilots will get to experience reserve. Let's fix it.
When a new hire RJ driver comes on here, and tells us how much better reserve duty was at his last company, clearly there's a problem.
By the way, according to an AA buddy, American pilots enjoy 13 days off and a 76 hour guarantee. And that's just for starters. 12 more days off and 36 hours more pay at the end of the year.
Suck it up? Barf it up is more like it.

The EWR reserve commute was just about to cost me my job because it was going to cost me my family. Fortunately [!?] I got furloughed. Sometimes it's a choice only in the sense that we always have a choice to quit. And if you're on the bottom of the list either from being a new hire or because the furlough line was drawn just below you, that's about the only choice you've got. Reserve rules are way better now than then though. Used to be continuous 24 hour a day SC. Insane.
