Fixes to reserve
#211
Try another domo then. Particularly one that just happens to be short staffed from April through September. Perhaps you'll change your cheery tune. I've lost track of my SC flying assignments.
Besides, no one is complaining about being assigned flying while on a Short Call assignment anyway. That's not the issue. There are a whole slew of other reasons a significant number of your fellow pilots would like to see some minor tweaks to reserve, irrespective of how wonderful reserve has been for you, personally.

3 years on SC/LC from 05-08. Never used on SC. In the last 2 years I bid reserve voluntarily about half the time. I was used on SC once, and called out illegally on another resulting in SNG 2 hour add pay. I probably average 11 or 12 SC's a month, So I was used 1 SC out of about 140 of them in the last 2 years.

If you are in an understaffed fleet and base, and getting used every day on reserve, being on reserve sucks under any system or set of rules. If you are used moderately or less, it can be a good deal.
If you hate waking up not knowing what is going to happen, you will not be happy on reserve.
If you commute, you will not be happy on reserve. Unless you like hanging out in a crash pad in your boxers and black socks, hunched over your laptop complaining on APC.

The only pilots I have heard who don't like SC's are on this board. Every single pilot I fly with on reserve wants as many as they can get.
The pilots that are complaining about reserve here are in the VERY VERY EXTREME MINORITY. Our reserve system rocks.
FSB should be paid. SNG is paid, I got it twice this year. 2 hours add pay each. I don't know why a SNG is any different than a FSB.

It is known that reservers want improvements. Not one person is debating that reserve could be better. The question is, what is better? What would have been worth giving up the 10am day one? All the airlines have a unique ways of doing reserve. SWA gives more days off to start but trades off unused reserve credits. DAL has long stretches of reserve with scheduling dictating the time off in that stretch. We treat Global and Basic differently. So what is a reserve system that we want, that the company can administer and one that increases QWL and QOL? Lets keep this to assignments and time off. Those againts the TA because it has no reserve improvements have already stated that assignment and time off out weigh compensation. No need to hash that out again in this thread.
1. ALPA doesn't want to add any fixes to reserve. It's just fine.
2. ALPA has had two opportunities to do so and has passed due to other priorities.
3. It costs negotiating capital to add "fixes" to reserve, what would you like to trade for it?
4. ALPA feels like reserve is a "temporary" problem. You'll be off reserve soon, so no need to spend negotiating capital on that.
Those are the responses I get when I ask my reps.

And please show me where it states that we are required to answer the phone on short call? My understanding is that you are required to return their call within a reasonable amount of time. Last I heard, reasonable was within 30 mins.
Not trying to split hairs, just like to see things in print. For example, a friend of mine was just given grief by a scheduler who insisted that 15 minutes was the limit. He disagreed and then spoke with a supervisor, who sided with him. We need to keep contractual stuff free from individual interpretation, whether its in print or based on past practice.
I never answer my phone, I always let it go to VM and I then return their call within a reasonable amount of time. This used to give you a chance to check the assignment for contractual legality and to verify your status on FIFO, but that little gem disappeared. Never had anyone blast me for that.
