There is no telling why some guys get the call and other don't. Do you have any LOR's?

I received my CJO on 14 Apr and have been informally told I'll be in the mid Aug class (1 Jun was my availability).

No, unfortunately I don't. Was hoping said friend would get me one after he stayed a bit. Then, he left and I was out of options. Wish there was something else I could do.

I am a new hire as well and will be commuting from Denver (if I want to stay married). Just wondering if there is much of a difference between SFO, LAX, or ORD as far as commuting goes. I.e. I assume there are a lot of commuters/PS pax DEN-ORD. Any other considerations a new guy should be thinking about?

I've been here three years and just made it back to DEN in March. I did LAX and SFO for the last 2 years and LAX is by far the easiest commute. Wx is always good, many commuting options, not very many commuters. SFO would probably be next easiest. A LOT of commuters from DEN to widebody and 737 Capt. Seemed like 3-4+ every flight. When the wx gets bad in SFO the delays are pretty rough. I usually commuted on F9 and WN and almost always made it on. Just had to leave a little earlier in the day. ORD would be the worst commute. Wx is usually bad (TS or snow) and fewer options to commute. WN doesn't fly there and a ton of F9 guys commute on their flight so you probably would have a tough time making their flights. A fair number of our commuters on us also. Anyway, good luck and hopefully the commute will be short lived.

I personally found the sfo commute from den to be the worst, by a pretty wide margin. Expensive hotels, wx issues and very senior pilots making the commute. Lax is the best. Ord is surprisingly not that bad at my seniority of low 4000s, but I have no idea what that looks like as a new hire. I do spend a lot of time on the jumpseat. I also know the f9 and other offline guys have a sketchy time of commuting to Ord at times. Only us, some aa, one or two f9 and spirit a day. Sw is an option thru Mdw and the L. Takes a couple of hours.

On the Ord wx, the new runways config helps with snow events, but obviously not ts. The hotels are cheap and readily available. The seniority, however, is much better out west.

DEN-LAX should be easier than SFO. Fewer delays due to weather and fewer commuters. SFO sees ALOT of senior wide body commuters.

LORs do NOT have to be United pilots, or even pilots. Have you ever flown with someone who would write a brief email saying you're a good guy? That's all you need.

Good to know. However...i am sure there is some sort of optimum mix. 9 non-UAL/non pilot LORs would probably not impress the HR program we are all trying to outsmart.

Every LOR is worth something. It may be small, but it is never negative. I had 22 when I was called. 3 UAL line pilots, 1 CP rec, check airmen, captains, first officers, and flight engineers from every airline I had ever worked at, a fellow CFI from way back, even a guy I worked with as a ramp agent.

I didn't try to hit a home run with every letter, but I tried to get on base any way I could.
