how committed to getting the job are you? If you want to work for United, the money is a small sacrifice. I know people that are willing to do anything and everything they can, they don't take things like this for granted. Do what it takes to get where you want to go. If $1000 is too much of a sacrifice, you have to ask yourself how bad do you truly want the job.

I don't think that's what he was saying at all. He wants the job. He is willing to drop the $1,000 (aka 50% of a monthly paycheck for some, aka 200% of their entire savings for some, aka a not-so-small sacrifice to some), but only if there is some actual benefit to doing so.

And that's a fair question. Does attending the event improve your chances of getting the interview, or accelerate the date you will eventually get it, and by how much?

We all assume that it will. We all assume that it does in a meaningful way. But nobody knows exactly how much.

Does attending BOTH days make any difference?

I can't see how it would. It might. But, again, nobody who knows is willing to say.

To squash any rumors on this point, the latest update very clearly said that you may only attend the event at the time you were invited for, so only once and only in one day.

As to worth, had they invited all that registered to Day 1 and then only some to Day 2, it would imply less importance to Day 1. But, UAL did cull the herd and sent out a few TBNTs as well, so if you got a Day 1 invite, you did make a cut to get there, but something less than the Day 2 cut. I would go if you were invited and can make it without calling out sick or something. I think it means they are looking at you in the future, and you could end up getting some type of black ball if invited to Day 1 and you don't show up. At a minimum, you have to email and decline the invite which is better than a no show.

Who knows how UAL made the cut from D1 vs D2. I'm guessing something to do with availability. Only 2 data points here but both of us are Day 1 with availability post-March 17.

Who knows indeed.

A buddy of mine has been to both OBAP and WIA with numerous internal recs and received a Day 1 invite. Others I know haven't been to any job fairs and just submitted their application and received Day 2 invites.

Would be interesting to know how they decided who would receive a Day 1 vs. Day 2 invite.

How UAL racks and stacks candidates is unknowable for sure. But a few datapoints to consider are that Chief Pilots are not doing a lot of Meet and Greets, Chief Pilots ask if you have done any of these job fairs, and most, but not all, getting interviews did.

Other than that you can scrub your resume and application, collect recs from friends at UAL, update your application flight time, medical, jobs...whatever, monthly and prepare the way you are comfortable doing for when you get the call.

Most of the people I know that got Day 2 invites have significantly more hours and are older than the people who got Day 1. There are some variances, but they usually have resumes that stick out from the pack.
Small sample size, but what I've seen

Thanks to everyone for giving me some good words of wisdom and some more things to think about. Ultimately I've decided to go. I found a pretty good deal but will only be on the ground a little over 24 hours.

For another data point my availability is summer '17. I'm hoping that most of us who got Day 1 invites have later availability dates and that's the reason for most to be in the Day 1 pool vs Day 2. Did anyone get a Day 1 invite with an availability date soon? Perhaps before March '17?

My buddy has had his application open since March 2015 and has attended OBAP and WIA and has multiple internal recs. Only thing I can think of is that he doesn't have enough multi-engine PIC time because most of his time is in the U-28.
