I'm curious what totals you come up with.
AA also won’t contribute to your 401k until year 2 if I’m not mistaken.

I just finished 1st year, still waiting for the big paycheck that should land this Friday. I am an AF reservist and do not have the benefit of the retirement pay, and I made significantly less in my AFRC job than a retiree does. You should make about 50-55k from UPS that first year. Add that to your retirement pay and you should be ok, unless you live somewhere expensive. It's actually been very good for my two kids to see my also-non-working bride and I sort through budgeting as a family. We turned our budget way down for two years (I did a first year somewhere else before getting hired at Brown). You'd be surprised how quick it goes.
BL: If year one pay is the only thing deterring you from coming to Brown, don't let it. Find a way to make it work and you won't regret it.

I like to remind myself of all the taxes I’m not paying right now.

Thank you for all the comments. I hope I can make it over to brown. Any ideal how far out you can apply? Delta announced that you can apply 2 years out if you are active duty. I am going to apply to UPS, Delta, American, United in that order. It is all based off location of bases. I currently reside in St. Augustine, FL. 19 months out from fully retired.

I don’t think there is a specific range that’s too early. But you can only apply when a window is open. UPS hiring is so bizarre that I would definitely apply everywhere. If you can get Delta now, then that’s a huge stress factor removed and you can keep applying to UPS.

If you are applying to UPS then you should be applying to FedEx too. Very Similar.

Acquisition costs are too high.

Actually, the acquisition is most times relatively cheap…. Its the maintenance and up keep costs that kill you…

Acquisition costs are negligible, unless I've been radically misunderstanding how this works...

Public schools, man.
