Commuting as a UPS pilot
#201
On B reserve I worked 4 days last bid. 1 overnight. 55 nights in my own bid. Picked up one turn on some off days to get a break from my honey do list. And I was getting too good at Call of Duty. My commute was tough one time. Had to leave an hour before report time for traffic. Live in base. Bid reserve. Best job ever.

I'm not sure what I can buy with an "offer" but how did our A plan raise do? Did it come in 1st or last? Also lets see how many offers come with zero concessions.

You are either:
1) Very senior,
2) have a very different view of crap schedules,
3) worked somewhere else before that you think Z schedules are that good.
I haven’t spoken to a single person that says Z schedules haven’t deteriorated tremendously and don’t think they are total crap.

"About 39 lines out of 329 are somewhat doable for those who commute. Over 150 have between 6-8 reports. Not 1 reserve line has a block of 14 days on in a row."
I'm not seeing anything like that on Z at this point.
Are you?
I haven't been here long to have a solid frame of reference on how good things used to be. How good did they used to be?

Bailing out because of commute issues in ANC is a little myopic, IMHO. As stated, senior folk are transferring domiciles, fleets, and taking upgrades making movement at the bottom very active. Not like we are in stagnationfest where that will be your life for years on end! Trip trade w/.OT, drop to trip board, do whatever you can. Can you do an extended stay (faux move) up there? Otherwise, It’s temporary. You came here for a reason right? I can give you multiple reasons to leave this place, but a temporary commute issue to ANC isn’t one of them.

TA is done, voted on, signed and sealed. Accept it and focus on the battles ahead instead of continuing to sulk here and on B&G like a spoiled kid who didn’t get his own way. If you still insist on critiquing others, theres a bunch who willingly waive the contract, who happily fly even more of these crappy schedules than bid awarded, and all those who don’t make the fatigue calls they probably should. Direct you anger in that direction, or would you just be pointing the finger at yourself…?

My personal opinion, the only way we can intelligently negotiate scheduling improvements is to buy our own “optimizer” software so we can run historical schedules and see what work rules produce the results desired. Without doing that we are just ****ing into the wind.

That’s a really interesting idea. Have you made the pitch to the IPA? Personally, I don’t have a lot of faith, so personally don’t expect much interest.

I have not yet. Although this thought has been percolating for a while. I had some experience in a past life with how switching from a human built schedule to one using software can result in unexpected changes. Schedule building can be a “wicked” problem, but software definitely helps figure out solutions that a team of humans probably wouldn’t have found. “Optimization” software won’t go away, but it also won’t really change much. What will change are inputs: work rules, FARs, destinations, route structure, aircraft capabilities, etc. If we as pilots want to negotiate, we have to understand how any given change will impact us. Ideally, we’d buy the exact same software package as our company uses, but it may not matter what brand of software used since a good algorithm will come to the same conclusions every time if the inputs are the same.
