Commuting as a UPS pilot
#101
Living near CGN or one of our euro gateways - It can be done quite easily with strong seniority. Being junior on any fleet - gunna be tough. You can do it but it won’t be pretty. Got wife and kids, probably not the best idea being junior either. Don’t live in or near a UPS gateway - really giving yourself a big problem to continually deal with.
Other factors:
The clean 2 week on and off lines are disappearing and go senior.
UPS flights have been challenging lately with the company packing the seats.
Covid made intl commuting nearly impossible so consider the risk of the next pandemic.
Tax residency - you will get eaten alive being a euro resident earning large income in the US.
I've talked to multiple new hires who were still attached abroad and intended to do the commute. Most, though not all, threw in the towel by the end of their first year.
Final thought, if you want it bad enough and are willing to sacrifice days off and your health to commute, comfortable to lose pay with dropped trips (if you can), and paying a noticeable amount of $ each month to make the commute, you can pull it off.
Good news:
With our vacation policy you can score large chunks of time in Europe. Easy to spend most of the summer there once you get a little seniority under your belt.
Easy to get 2 weeks off here and there to make multiple trips through the year. We went 3 times in 1 year a few years ago.

Does anyone commute from ATL. Just starting at DL and wondering if the pain of commuting to potentially ANC would kill all the benefits of UPS over DL. I’d probably be willing to move to SDF eventually but at least 3 years commuting-and based on my background probably getting 74 to ANC.

I did 74 ANC for less than 6 months and moved to SDF. Quick and simple.

I’m doing that commute, and it’s way easier to just commute on brown tails. Yes there are Delta and Southwest flights as well and those guys/gals have been great as far as accommodating us. Delta is a great employer too, but I haven’t seen any pilot envy amongst our group, and I haven’t heard of anyone leaving Brown to go to Delta lately.

Lots. Can be a little challenging when you have a trip that commercials on one end. The locals have a chat group when they need a ride. Seems to work pretty well.
