Commuting as a UPS pilot

Everyone who surfs the B&G knows who you are talking about. I happen to agree with the poster that our current scheduling rules have been essentially compromised by the “optimizer” software. I’m not sure if any rules we could negotiate would survive contact with the software. This is an industry wide issue, but our heavy dose of night flying can make it intolerable.

That is who I am assuming is being mentioned. The reasons given for upgrade were perfectly logical and I am certainly not going to argue that any captain who isn’t senior should be stuck with terrible schedules. I’m now relatively senior in my seat, but plan to upgrade next year hopefully. It’s in my interest for improvements in scheduling. I don’t intend to let seniority become the golden handcuffs that trap me in the right seat forever.

Probably, I know where I want to wind up. My plan accounts for maximizing flying/layovers that interests me, minimizing trips through long term training, and minimizing opportunity cost of delaying upgrade. We shall see if my plan works or not. MD11 retirement plans may throw a monkey wrench in the works, but who knows.

I've posted FedEx vs UPS in another thread, but I'm specifically looking for insight on the commuting aspect. We were originally planning on moving to somewhere between Indy and Louisville after the AF, but now we want to go back home (Western Mass).
BDL will be 45 min drive (longer in the winter), ALB/BOS 1+45.
What would commuting be like as a new guy? I'm double-blessed with youth (34) and a very low SSN (only a factor for FedEx; 15xx). One of those actually is a blessing wrt earnings and time to retirement, that much I know. EDIT: I should have clarified that I mention this because I doubt I'll have much control over my initial assignment.
So far I've been heavily advised to go FedEx. I just want to make sure I 100% understand the decision I'm making, especially since we're now committing to NE / Mass.
Sorry to mix topics here, I'm mostly looking for insight into commuting for UPS, but I can't help but add in the add'l consideration (FDX) at this point.
Thank you!

Southwest Florida commuting
Good afternoon:
I have an August 30 start, and am assigned to the light class.
I live in Naples. Does anyone here have any experience commuting out of RSW or FLL to SDF? I know that MIA is very Senior, and may be a long shot from the start.
With that in mind, my drive to MIA is just under 2 hours, and with traffic, well over the 2 hour limit at times. So, I’m not sure that MIA is even the best option overall. I’ve been told that the Z Line may be a better option. Can anyone offer some insight on that?
I have realistic expectations that I may not get either of those choices out for the gate. I will plan accordingly for that. I’m really thinking about a point in the future when I may have more control.
