Default MIA commuting info

Trying to see what a few years of commuting in the 74 from South Florida will be like until enough seniority is obtained to bid over to MIA (and maybe hold a line)...

1. Any info on what a MIA commute to ANC is like? I'm sure traveling from one corner of North America to the other is a massive pain but how easy or hard is it to fly on company metal or jump seat to/from?

2. What about MIA to SDF?

3. Bonus Question: Once domiciled in MIA, what's a realistic furthest distance that you can live and make the 1.5 hr reserve callout? I'm curious how feasible Ft Lauderdale or Pompano Beach might be...

TIA

Reserve min call in SDF is 1+30
Reserve min call in ANC, ONT and MIA is 2+00

A number of people do Florida-SDF-ANC and back, MIA shouldn't be any worse and may be better than PBI, MCO, etc.

Atlas or somebody else may operate MIA-ANC and might be an option for you.

As BoilerUP knows, Atlas has scheduled lines (DHL, Amazon, etc.), customer based schedule lines (constant rolling dep times based on customer’s ability to meet the aircraft/delays happen frequently) and our normal delays due to crew resourcing, aircraft maintenance, etc.; therefore, some are much better than others but still hit or miss at times.

*Fortunately the MIA-ANC looks fairly steady but infrequent and taking a quick snapshot for the next two months as an example = Starting 05/17, 05/24, 05/31, 06/07, and so on every 7 days at 1505z there are departures to ANC from MIA. Out of the 10 flights there are two that do not have a spread of 7 days. 2 and 5 days spread are the anomalies and one of those leave at closer 2000z. Definitely an option like BoilerUP mentioned, but I wouldn’t bank on it. Atlas is a synonym for change.

We have people who live in Naples and north of Palm Beach and sit reserve, not an issue. You just have to be fully packed and out the door in 5-10 mins. You will be able to hold a line in MIA fairly quickly, albeit a real crappy one, 2-3 on, 2-3 off, completely uncommutable. But if you live in South FL, not as bad.

Thanks, this is good to know. I've searched "MIA" and "Miami" and there has been very little discussion of that domicile in the UPS threads over the years. Considering it's only like 5% of the pilot group, I suppose that's to be expected.

I'm in an upcoming heavy class so the plan is commute out of South FL to what will most likely be 74s out of ANC, bid over to SDF as soon as I can (to shorten the commute) and stick with that for a number of years until I have enough seniority to hold a MIA line that isn't 100% domestic night sorts.

... but I really have no idea how feasible/ill-advised that would be.

Might run out of time unless age 67.5 goes through. I kid. Sounds like a plan. Welcome aboard.

Question Living in Europe

Is it even reasonable to even think about living of the other side of the pond and working at brown? I'm leaving the European market and looking to go back stateside but ideally I would love to live here (LIS) and work there? I know that Atlas has 17/13 rosters and their gateway programs makes it slightly easier but is it even feasible to think about doing that with Brown?

TIA

It can be done. There's a Dutch guy from my class who lives in AMS and commutes to ANC. Seems like a drag, but he makes it work.

I'd have where to crash in EWR, I was actually more curious about the rosters themselves, can I bid for a roster with my work days straight through and hence my off days would be all together as well?

At least on Z (International 75/76 SDF Base) yes it could work. But there are SO many lines with 6 or more reports over a 56 day bid period. You could try to trip trade to improve - but trip trading is such a fickle thing due to the company making it difficult to get them approved.

Most reserve lines have 3 - 4 reports. The amount of available two report reserve lines are super disappointing. You could do it but at first...with any consistency....unlikely. Maybe with two - three years of seniority you could do it? Seniority progression on Z is glacial and if international quality of life starts to improve - folks will likely return to the Z pushing the junior folks down further.

I can't speak to 74 SDF / ANC, MD11, A300 or 75 Domestic.
