Default Anyone move to SDF for UPS?

New to UPS. So far the schedules are not what I expected, doesn't seem commutable. Getting a lot of 4on/3off with Sunday/Monday starts. Sometimes I only get 2 days off inbetween trips and with commuting and 2 small girls, it has taken a toll on my QOL.

Contemplating a move to SDF to have a better QOL. Has any new hire recently moved to SDF? Can you share your experience here. Love it, hate it, regret it?

Cheers

Living in domicile makes a big difference. Those Ive flown with who have done it dont regret it. The schdules will always suck here and get worse. If your young and have the ability to go to a pax major and live in a nice city do it.

Mind my asking if you’re on the 75/76?

I have an April 7 class and the only thing giving me concern is the issues with the commute from the west coast. I have a fairly young family at home as well.

How many bid periods have you been through?

Trying to dig up any info I can find.

Not trying to hijack the thread.

Yes, being at the bottom sux especially for commuters. Think of it as a short term problem. With a little seniority built up you can commute from more and more places more and more easily. I have young kids, have commuted, have been junior on fleet for years and have made it work. If forced to Louisville I would not stay with this company. The compensation and benefits is not worth the trade offs for me and my family living in the SDF area. That’s us. YMMV. Boiler has quality couterarguments. Here’s my main reasons for staying away:

First off is schools. Kentucky and surrounding areas just ain’t exactly a bastion for competitively good education. A possible exception or two noted depending on your circumstances but it’s problematic, expensive, and a big reason many don’t choose to move to sdf. Just the facts, not being a hater.

The value of being close to family when you have young kids.

Louisville is a small college town and you’re kind of in in the middle of nowhere. Culturally it’s tied to the Deep South so if that’s not your thang be cautious.

And so on...

Look, a big reason to come to UPS is that you can live anywhere, be that where you’re from, or where your family and friends are. You will make some trades offs to have that privilage and one of them is the suck of being junior especially in light of our new “optimized,” schedules. Long term, big picture: live where you want.

Just like working for UPS, moving to SDF isn't for everybody.

Oldham Co KY and Floyd Co IN have excellent public schools, putting you ~30min from the parking lot. There is also a strong private Catholic/Christian school system in Jefferson County. There are some good Jefferson County Public Schools (two of the best high schools in Kentucky in Dupont Manual and Male) but most people advise staying away because moving near a good school does not guarantee your kids will attend that good school due to well-intentioned but poorly executed JCPS policies.

Cost of living in SDF is lower than many comparable-sized cities in the nation, even in the midwest, with a reasonable local/state tax situation. Don't like basketball, horses or bourbon? Louisville has a pretty good arts scene that IMO is under-appreciated, a 100 score from HRC, a growing fitness culture with spring and fall running series including at least one full Marathon and an Ironman, lots of areas nearby for outdoor hobbies like running/canoeing/hiking/camping/fishing/hunting/boating/biking/offroading, and the restaurant scene is excellent for a Metro area of ~1M. You're also 3 hours or less to drive Nashville, 4 hours to St. Louis, <2 hours to Cincinnati or Indianapolis, 5 hours to Chicago.

I lived here for years prior to being hired by UPS and I grew up not far from SDF, so my perspective is admittedly different than a pure transplant.

I know one person who commuted from the left coast as a newhire and moved to SDF in order to see his family more; ultimately they were kind of miserable being away from their historical home and friend/family support network and moved back. I know somebody else that did a similar thing, moving to SDF then back closer to their family support network, who is now seriously considering moving back to SDF because their kids are a bit older and they overall were very happy with the area. I know a third person who moved to SDF as a newhire, his family didn't particularly care for it, and now they live elsewhere and are happier.

Reality is being junior ANYWHERE subjects you to less-than-desirable schedules; UPS is not unique in that. Living in domicile will give you more scheduling flexibility, allow you to see your family more, and provide greater opportunities to be less tired...but that may or may not be worth the compromises based on individual family situations.

Caveat Emptor, Semper Gumby, etc.

I am also scheduled to be in the April 7 class. I’m just curious where you are commuting from and what airframe you are on. I will be commuting out of PHL and I’ve always heard that is basically the easies commute in the system.
Thanks.

My wife and I have lived all over the world, so we thought moving to SDF would be easy. Wow we were sure wrong. I now do those two leg weekend commutes with a smile on my face, because I know what is on the other end of that stick.

Was at a legacy pre post 911 till 2006. I can tell you come here if its a step up, regional, acmi etc. Do Not, I repeat Do Not pass on UAL,DAL or SWA. Use this place as a temp stop if able. Your quality of life will be so much better. If you dont believe me it will take about a month to get your first taste of UPS. I ran into a guy who left UAL three yrs ago and lives near their east coast hub and is kicking him self. Well he was on his way to a 5 day 2 legs a night hub turn.
