It has probably saved us close to $2k. Having a friend who can check the loads accurately and precisely for you is the key.
I agree, non rev benefits are huge IMO. I miss the DL bennies (time of check in vs. seniority can be debated all day). If you know how to play the game and have backup plans it’s not bad. Now if you’re trying to take the family to Hawaii for the fourth or July, or the Caribbean for spring break and expect it to be seamless you’re going to be disappointed. Like others have said try to bid trips that start and/or end with commercials. At least rack up the points.

Parents do get Southwest privileges and maybe a couple other random LCCs.. my retired parents use the southwest bennie regularly with ease…

as far as my wife and kids? DL and WN credit cards in combination with our miles from commerical deadheads racks up 100s of thousand of miles/points a year. Positive space booked tickets in our shorts and flip flops.. I would never subject the family to the stress of space available travel again!

It would be nice if folks could answer questions on this topic without “travel shaming” the questioner! I know, we make a lot of money and can afford a lot of things. But we decide what to spend our money on, and there’s no need to impose our spending decisions on others that are just looking for knowledge.

Stepping down from soapbox now 😀

even with positive space tickets, getting on a plane with shorts and flip flops is just downright dumb.

It's a share the pain with seniority not meaning so much system. Yes, it's always better to be senior than junior, but once you get to the basics of the lines, there's not a world of difference between lines of similar types ie Europe, pac rim, round the world. Mostly, what day do you want to start. A good trip and a bad trip for all, vs two goods for the senior guy and two bads for the junior.
Any idea how long it takes at the legacies to be able to have this lifestyle?

It has nothing to do with appearances, everything to do with not wanting to go down a slide in shorts and sandals.

This x2! I pick up turns for the commercials and miles and not for the money. My wife and I fly everywhere 1st class on the miles that I rack up, screw non-reving! it's about showing up in shorts and looking down our noses at everyone else.
