Cant stress enough that this is just rumor. I don’t claim to know anything as fact. The rumor is this applies to Pratt MDs. As far as I know, FedEx and WG have all GE engines.

We didn't know we were getting MDs until the morning it was announced and landed in SDF in full livery that day. We may park a few "Christine" airplanes, but UPS hasn't parked an airplane until WELL beyond it's useful service life (barring the 8, which was an FAA airworthiness records issue in a crippled economy). I see a fairly long life as the obvious replacement is a whole new engine class. Maybe we will see the 777-300 conversion prove itself with other carriers and move towards that, but we are talking significant time and a slow transition.
Everyone likes to spread rumors and they run rampant. We will know when the MDs are parked when we get reserve assignments to take them to Victorville or wherever, and we will know about a new airframe when it's on the ramp.

Fedex does have both engines, I have seen them in person.

Fair enough

What are these external factors? Fallout from the Pratt powered UAL 777 that had the un-contained engine failure and the the cowling redesign?

I think he was referring to the fact that Boeing hates supporting the MD11. I vaguely remember mx telling me that Boeing’s contractual support for the MD is ending sometime in the future. Who knows? Maybe Boeing will give FedEx and UPS a deal on replacements just to get out of having to support them.
I do know that a section of the Pratt engines is no longer being made and is increasingly harder and more expensive to come by. I heard that directly from the DO.

Don’t the bus and MD share the same engine?
