While the zed tickets have come in handy to save a few bucks occasionally....we just buy tickets.

In my (n=2) experience with zed agreements, that sort of stuff varies from carrier to carrier. TWA allows immediate family, USAir adds parents etc.
And the details change subtly over time. If you're ranking things ... UPS nonrev opportuniteis are MUCH WORSE than any pax carrier. Their pension is MUCH BETTER. take your pick

Zed’s are usually economy like others have said unless you butter the crew up with treats. Non rev benefits are a benefit. I didn’t place it high up on my list of things when applying here but I don’t blame anyone that would. Working in customer service at DL I always priced last minute seats that non revs got by just looking at the loads and showing up to the airport and it was amazing how much a first class seat from somewhere like ATL-JNB would cost inside of 12hrs.
As a commuter and kid less I don’t travel much but traveling as a non rev isn’t the devil some around here make it to be. With that being said if you’re trying to go to Hawaii during spring break or summer it’s not going to be fun. It’s just planning and luck.

Not everyone gets commercials since the company is obsessed with deadheading everyone on company metal. Worst case example is a 14 hour duty day deadhead home from Honolulu in a 767 cockpit jumpseat. Absolutely horrible. No legacy airline makes their pilots deadhead in the cockpit..ever. period. And you can buy as many confirmed tickets as you like for you and your family at a discount or obviously fly space available for free as much as you'd like. UPS won't even give discounts on SHIPPING to any of their pilots. We've all tried...

if you are traveling as a single, it is waaaaay simpler. I can’t count how many times I used to see families sitting in DFW all day trying to non-rev. You are right, it’s not impossible if you are flexible. My wife and I used to go to Hawaii (AA prior to 9/11) in February. It was never super difficult as it was post holiday and prior to spring break.

And then there are the big international commercials that the senior folks can consistently hold that the company likes to take away at the last minute with no penalty whatsoever. Enjoy your 48 hour trip home on company metal and then figure out a way home if you are a commuter. Maybe if you're lucky you can enjoy the crab sandwichs from HNL catering.
