UPS is a vertically/horizontally integrated transport juggernaut with an airline. FedEx, an airline contracting subs under an iconic brand, logo. If either the Standiford barons or Graceland gentry still seriously intend to operate the long orphaned, 3 motor Christine of freighters, that could conceivably move forward. Why they might tacitly budget or stretch such a project, industry can only guess. Strange business and as you say, forever unpredictable.

Currently on a line that is well over guarantee with 11 days off. Same for next BP. Not by choice. You would be correct in your assertion that we are NOT overstaffed.

I’m not an expert in business by any means but this could be a motivation for a big capital expenditure (airplanes).
“The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), signed on July 4, 2025, permanently restores 100% bonus depreciation for qualifying property placed in service after January 19, 2025, halting the prior TCJA phase-down. This allows businesses to deduct the full cost of eligible capital equipment, machinery, and specific improvements in the first year.”

ORD MX told us a while back that they were told UPS asked Boeing for an exemption to the 767F production line (similar to what has been announced for the current 777F), and Boeing said “Yeah sure, but you also have to order 777s.”
Interesting rumor for sure.

Probably much of nothing, but UPS has been paying to reserve N numbers since 2023 in the 700 series (i.e N701UP). DC-8s were registered to UPS in the 700 and 800 series, but they don't seem to pay for anything in the 800 series these days. Wheels Up has been taking those it seems. https://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinq...NNumberInquiry
