Back to the subject of the thread. I've been here almost 9 years, and am just starting to reverse commute from ANC.
As far as new hires commuting to ANC, I don't see that happening in the near future. ANC is currently the Senior FO base.
Unfortunately I don't see any new hires in the future until the contract is signed.

Well Said ! (I'm a 26 yr MD11 Capt.) 26 yrs ago this was a GREAT choice for me. For someone to pass up a job with a Legacy Carrier NOW for night freight your out if your mind.
As for as a MGMT job- that is a dispized position that one would quickly regret. Choose wisely those seeking to enter the POOL.

UPS hires them to apply pressure on the union pilots. They are given factious job titles which seem to fool only them. Their purpose is to fly without contract protection and be used as leverage is driving down labor costs. They are captains in name only and if they every tried to make a decision the company did not like they would be punished. In fact stories abound about these so called Captains asking their union First Officers to stand up to the company because they can't themselves.

UPS gets away with it because on average the union pilot brings enough experience to the cockpit to operate safely.
But...but... How is that allowed by your contract?

and there is the rub, it is allowed per the teamster contract offered to the initial group of pilots at UPS circa 1988. This small group of pilots numbered less then 50 ( total guess on why part here) and it was take it or leave it. I imagine that back then those pilots might have believed UPS much like most new hires today. The IPA was formed after dissatisfaction set in over the next couple of years. The IPA inherited this crazy system and we have been unable to get ride of it.

At its conception I suppose the beginning IPX group actually thought they would be mgt pilots and not replacement pilots as they have become.

UPS has somewhat less then 200 of them to "mgt" a small airline of 2,500.

I thought that the IPX group of 24 or 25 pilots were the actual start of the UPS airline, after the company bought the operating certificate from IPX, along with its pilots. Why are you calling them "replacement pilots?"

Just wondering.

From my conversations with knowledgeable folks at the IPA, the current managers don't have any management authority. They can't hire and fire or make major decisions. Following the Teamsters strike in '97, the management group flew struck cargo, beginning the "NURP or Replacement" moniker. This label appeared to be solidified during the furlough when UPS hired several folks into management while furloughing line pilots. Having said all of that, some managers have more authority than others, but the VFR Direct to the left seat new hire manager captain would fall into the NURP category from what I understand.

I'm one of the new wave of hiring; agreed that it would be high risk / questionable practice to pass up a class at a legacy waiting for Brown. Some of the older guys have a good argument about coming here to catch up for retirement quicker. If you live close to our domiciles, detest pax flying, or live internationally, brown might also be a good choice. Otherwise....

Jetjok, my mistake in using poor grammar. The "they" I meant where the original pilots hired outside of the union back in start up of the UPS airlines. NOT the IPX pilots.

You are correct in that the IPX group was the original start of the UPS airline

did I clear it up any?

Airbum,

No problems. I just wanted to make sure that the record was straight. And interestingly enough, from what I remember, when I flew for UPS, back in '89, everyone disliked the original IPX guys, probably as much as you guys dislike the NURPS. Might have been a case of penis envy.

Not sure about the sediment towards the original IPX guys but I have flown with two of the three remaining IPX guys and both are great quality guys that I am happy to call friends, the third is a legend on his own accord and I wish I get to get a chance to fly with him too.
