Commuter for UPS
#31
A fairly high up manager type recently told me that I'd probably only hold base type lines on the Airbus but those would be pretty easy to commute from. Pushing me pretty hard to consider management since I have a lot of experience running my own companies and RJ captain for almost four years. They seem to get a bad rap on here but this guy was very generous with his time and very helpful. Definely not the big bad guys that some on here make them out to be.
Seriously, what makes you think you're qualified to give me a line check flying a 747-400 into Mumbai? Your four years as an RJ Captain here in the states? You're a funny guy.

Boeingluvr,
First of all if your goal is to live in the MD area and commute to Louisville, then why would you even consider management. If you don't know it already, as a manager at UPS you almost certainly will have to move to Louisville, but also WHEREVER ELSE they want you to move to in the future, like Rockford, Ontario, Anchorage etc.. You can say no, but that's the end of your career. So if it's stability you want and control of your life as a resident of Maryland, A mgt position is the worst thing you could consider.
A Mgr who left back in 97 told me that they promised him hard days, problem was they didn't lie, 12 hours on 12 hours off. Good luck

Yes, and would most likely be commuting from the Baltimore area. If given the opportuity, which would be the best fleet to commute on being junior. Moving to one of the domiciles is probably not possible.
My goal would be to minimize commutes and stay out as long as possible while getting blocks of days off. Fantasy, I know.

Some of our new hires are already being reassigned too ...

History lesson; in 1997 the Teamsters ( truck drivers & ground crews) went on strike. The IPA ( pilot group ) honored the teamster strike & did NOT cross their strike line. However, every NURP @ UPS crossed the strike line, flew union goods across a strike line. In the union biz we call that SCAB work. Labeled forever!

Someone who was here might pipe up and offer an explanation, but some deal was made, and they were never added to the list.
Carry on.....

If I told you you could be hired as a direct entry training captain at Delta, wouldn't you think there was something highly fishy going on? Wouldn't you wonder why they are courting you, an domestic RJ driver, to train very highly experienced and distinguished professionals on Boeing and Airbus aircraft in a global theater, neither of which you have any experience; please, take no offense to your resume, just stating the facts. With some research you'll find that the reason YOU are being courted for this position is that no one else wants it. Most have the integrity not to undermine their fellow aviators and profession by taking such a position. Most don't want to show up to work knowing they are constantly being laughed at by their peers and having zero respect from those they work with. And keep in mind, a major aspect of our contract negotiations is to eliminate management flying altogether. Just the facts, do your research.

Baltimore has 2 flights on UPS a day to SDF. On leaves at 1030pm, the other around 8am, Monday nights thru Friday nights. Going back home, again service is only on M-F nights, there is a direct leaving around 4 am, and a flight through RFD leaving at 2am. Southwest has 3 direct flights a day during the week. Seeing as Base Lines tend to have a fair amount of commercials DHs, all combined, it doesn't look like BWI would be a bad commute to junior schedules in SDF at all. And don't forget, you can trade and shuffle stuff around with open time to an extent (I average 50% denied). I know guys around PHL, EWR, and ATL can commute back and forth all day long to SDF with relative ease.

The base trips on the bus for this bid period wouldn't be that bad from BWI. Lots of coming and going, but a good amount of commercial DHs at the front and/or back ends of the trips. Some have long blocks on with long blocks of days off. There are only a couple of lines (109, 119) that look unpleasant but still doable, especially being able to utilize company to go back and forth for quick stops at home in between trips which is a big help if you have kids. The worst lines would otherwise keep you away from home for about 15-17days/28 with a bad commute, the better ones you could probably have 14/28 or more. Note that the worst lines don't necessarily go to the most junior either...

I've heard the same thing, but it was before my time as well so I don't know the names or circumstances. I do find it ironic that those who were here during that time bark like wild animals about SCABs, but let this one slide while a deal was made with UPS to cover for SCABs after the strike...wow. I've talked to a lot of guys that don't even realize we still have SCABs in the IPA as well.
