It's unlikely any of the big 3 would buy Alaska. The regulators would create too many hurdles and make them divest too much space in congested airports to create ULCC competition to make it worthwhile. I think JBLU makes the most sense but good luck sewing that one up after the VX debacle. I think Southwest is going to go after a couple of much smaller airlines that are less likely to resist the Borg.
Most likely Alaska will continue to plod along doing what they do until they can't anymore. Then they will be dissolved and the assets will be bought up. I'm not giving a time frame on that. They do have quite a niche with SEA locals and the Alaska flying. It could be sustainable for quite a while. Especially if they drop the transcontinental flying and just partner up like the AA thing. When they do start to collapse the first thing to go will be the 320s.

Alaska, financially is the healthiest carrier in the country, yes, let me re-iterat, Alaska Airlines is the most financially sound Airline in the United States. They have weathered 90 years in this industry while countless others have folded. Size to many of you is the only thing that matters. In this industry it guarantees nothing…ie Pan Am, Eastern, TWA, Braniff, and on and on. Alaska is in the drivers seat in this next round of consolidation. Most of you can not handle this fact because of your blinded by your disdain for our management. The entirety of VX merger debt has been paid, paid during some of the worst times in aviation history, paid easily.
Our max order has unbelievable value, our cost per aircraft is well bellow even SWA’s order. Looking back on it now AS management wishes it was an order of 300 MAX aircraft, we will never get that kind of deal again. We can complete with anyone, we can chip away at almost any transcontinental pairing we want, we grow Hawaii where we will see fit. In the end though, we will likely merge because that is what’s best for this industry and our shareholders.

I assure everyone in the CEO chat boards, they all laugh at how clueless pilots are in finance. Maybe that is why so many of our number need age 65 or even now 67.

I can say with confidence that our board is now in total control. There is a reason why BM was not given the Chairman seat…. There is a reason PB was. Our executives are now under greater pressure then ever before and it showed in NY with CM. Things are moving, I feel like very fast, but this is aviation, so what feels like spring right now, could very well end up being late this year, but change is definitely in the air.

Alaska would NEVER merge or be taken over because they are in dire financial straits. We will merge out of necessity. Two enemies will become friends and battle the others.

SWA did, they got a great deal. AS was first out of the box and were rewarded handsomely for taking that risk. Yes, AS deal per aircraft was better then the deal the largest 737 operator in the world received.

Stay tuned to the news channels.
