Plus the senior guy probably was just going to take it all in Jul and Dec anyway, he only traded because it was his kid... not like he was going to do that for you under any circumstances.
Only fix is probably ban all trading. Otherwise trading that benefits *you* is OK, but when it benefits somebody else it's nepotism, insider trading, etc. Where do you draw the line?

In theory, it's a problem and I find it distasteful but in reality how do you fix it?

Vacation time from July 1 through September 15 and December 20 through January 3 awarded and subsequently vacated before the runs are posted for that month shall be offered at the time vacated to pilot(s) in order of Seniority, beginning with the pilot just junior to the pilot who vacated the bid

A junior pilot bidding at 100% shouldn’t be able to get Christmas Vacation or 4th of July vacation just because they are friends with the number 1 person. That is violating seniority.
What if people could trade vacancies? The person about to retire will give their Captain spot to their new hire friend….

He didn’t. He found a guy to trade with, as could anyone else. You are free to ask anyone with July vacation if they can part ways with a couple July days in exchange for something else.
As for trade vacancies, isn’t that precisely what people want here with monthly base bids?

Seniority is used to bid and award your original schedule. After that, it should be a free for all.

Because we need 18 vac days to be off for the entire month, and in round 1 bidding you have to bid consecutive days. So guys bid 18+ days in July and then later can trade some days away.

Can you not cancel your vacation? Just cancel 6 days or whatever and then let the junior people rebid for it

Section 6.K.7
Vacation time from July 1 through September 15 and December 20 through January 3 awarded and subsequently vacated before the runs are posted for that month shall be offered at the time vacated to pilot(s) in order of Seniority, beginning with the pilot just junior to the pilot who vacated the bid
Section 22.I.4.b
One-Sided Trade: One (1) Bid Run pilot may pick up a Flight Grouping from another Bid Run pilot (with their concurrence) for no Flight Grouping in return. Such one-sided trades shall only be allowed through an online trade board on a first-come, first-served basis. The intent
of this provision is to allow a pilot to drop a Flight Grouping that they would otherwise not be able to drop due to minimum staffing. It is not intended for senior pilots to bid for Flight Groupings in order to drop them to junior pilots who could not otherwise hold them. If the MEC feels at any time that this provision is being abused, it may at its sole discretion direct that this function of the Program be disabled.
We have had issues with married people giving senior trips to their junior spouses. MEC warned them that they would lose trading privileges if it continued
