SAN Base opening, finally…
#211
Opening a base due to growth is one thing. Opening a base at the expense of around 128 pilots is completely another.
There will be downgrades. At the expense of people from the PNW moving to San Diego and learning the hard way their income will be taxed at 13% and houses their wife likes are 3-5 million.

It's great that you're getting something you want. The question remains. Did you want the chance to live in San Diego at the expense of 40 captains being pushed back to FO at your airline? You're the one putting this in the frame that it's complaining. I said this would happen and now it is.

People who have been wanting a San Diego base are not going to be shedding any tears for the pilots who are downgraded or displaced. We have at least one pilot at this airline calling for furloughs because he didn’t like his monthly line value. Others not wanting reserves to not have access to flying on their day off. The point is as a whole people care what’s happening to them, the only people caring that 40-50 captains or whatever number it winds up being are downgraded are those 40-50.
The sad thing is they can't actually be intellectually honest about the fact that this isn't that great of an airline to be at, compared to the majors due to the lack of growth.
Although with the revisions to Q4 profit today I am certain there will be quite a few piggies squealing when they see their PBP check.

I’m just gonna go ahead and wait to see the bid award before I get all upset about anything but taking first available upgrade always has a risk of being temporary, literally everywhere. There might be some forced downgrades, but not for the reasons a certain someone has been chanting for like 2 years now. We will have a net gain in captains, that's a good thing.
I'd imagine that anyone "downgraded" would just be on paper due to the additional upgrades next year. Once it all shakes out I don't think anyone who was a CA and still wants to be one will not be a CA again.
Certainly no furloughs. There's absolutely no indication of that, and many to the contrary.

If there's domicile churn and bleeding edge junior CA's get displaced because there are people senior to them who take the opportunity, no I'm not concerned. BTDT, didn't ratchet my lifestyle up when I knew darn well I was in a likely temporary tax bracket.
Also we're literally talking about people being displaced from the top 5% of household income down to the top 10%. That's if wifey doesn't work.
But fundamentally, if they're shrinking the company by net 40 CA's that was going to happen anyway, not the fault of SAN.

When I was first hired I remember hearing about downgrades, and maybe it was some PTSD from the regionals, but I remember being shocked to hear people talking about it like it was not the worst thing in the world. It took being a senior-ish FO and experiencing senior-ish FO pay at a major to understand what they were talking about. I mean, I couldn't pay cash for a Maserati, but life was not bad.
Downgrades 2026. We will rebuild!
