SAN is another expensive West Coast base that has cheaper surrounding suburbs. Its no different than SFO, PDX or SEA. There are tons of pilots who own 2 million+ homes in these domiciles and there are plenty of pilots who own 500k houses, a marginal drive away. There are 500k homes within a 45-minute drive from SFO. That is no different than SAN, SEA, and PDX.
that’s all relative… Rates may be higher in particular States, but how much home are you getting in those places?

I’d argue a $800k home in say Idaho would be more like $2million in SEA. Rates may be higher in Boise, but for the type of home you could very well be break even or ahead.

I’dd rather pay $10k for an $800k home with 3500sqft and 3/4 acre yard, than pay $10k for a 2million small home with no yard in the Bay Area.

Then factor in exactly what your property taxes go towards.

I don’t own property in either place so just an example before the fact checkers dig into real estate values.

That's OK. I can be home with my family more, they can be home with their family more. If they don't like the rain, maybe consider moving? Taxes and cost of everything isn't that much worse than WA and OR, probably pay a little more but that's just the price of being able to go running with your shirt off 360 days out of the year.

My guess is that most of the Mexico flying out of SAN will turn, either back to SAN or somewhere north. Likely won’t have a lot of Mexico layovers, based on how the flying is build out of LAX.

Latin American layovers out of LAX have layovers ranging from 10:30 day rest short back (land at 5am, depart that afternoon and return LAX around 18:00) for GDL. The trip actually goes senior, since the footprint is from midnight to 18:00 and pays 10:30. Plus, GDL is about a 3 hours flight and easier to suffer through at night.

LIR can be anything from day rest-short back to 36 hours at one of the best layover hotels in the system (after a 2 hour drive). Plenty of 15ish hour layovers at the hotel near the airport. Also goes senior because of the footprint.

BZE 15 hour layover.

CUN short back for the red eye. 24-26 hour layover for the day time flights.

GUA roughly 24 hour layover

SJO roughly 24 hours

SJD and PVR sprinkled in, usually 20-24 hours.

That LIR with a 2 hr drive was delayed even longer recently due to an accident/road conditions and ended up causing a cancellation due to some customs/airport/timing issue. The evening LIR-LAX flight. What a ridiculous reason for a cancel. How long for this hotel to last? I like nice locations and all but a 1.6-2 hr drive each way is ridiculous.

28+ hours I'll take the long van ride. Short stay is just fine for 10-14 hours, but it's just a basic hotel.

If there's one thing I miss about SkyWest, it would be the IT.

But that would be the only thing.

Basic hotel for a basic layover is fine by me. This isn’t Tokyo, London, Paris, Rome. That 4 hr drive just isn’t worth it IMO. Now a 50+ hr layover like FAs have, sure.

PBS also had a time away from base to credit ratio you could bid for.

Plus we could split trips and trade / try to drop / pickup splits. I so wish we had that at UAL.
