I hope everyone understands what we are up against. Contract are you kidding, check back in a year, maybe 2. This is about job preservation, everyone’s job. The guy sitting next to you in the cockpit, the girl you flew with last week. His family, her family... If you haven’t woken up yet it’s time. Alaska is 12 weeks away from making life changing decisions, decisions that will severely impact yours and your fellow brothers and sisters lives. I assure you the numbers are sobering. A lot of it is out of our hands, but we should all be giving it everything we have. Hoping, as one united pilot group, we are able to pull our company through this unbelievably bleak time. There is opportunity, there is possibility but that will only be achieved or realized, by “everyone rowing together”.

A total shut down is about the only thing that might work. Piecemeal closures of schools and facilities are only moving the herd from one field to another. We have one shot, close everything down for 2-4 weeks and see if the transmission rate slows. The airlines are in talks for government assistance. I would believe that a forced shutdown would make getting that assistance easier to get approved.

A forced shut down may help mitigate the extreme losses all airlines are operating at right now. Not having to fly around empty airplanes burning gas and the easement of gate utilization restrictions will at least stem the bleeding. Plus, if we’re all forced to stay home, instead of a percentage of pilots being furloughed and receiving no paycheck, we’d all be out and get our guaranteed pay. I’m sure there’s a break even point but having to only pay 79 hrs to all pilots may help blunt the blow and delay furloughs.
The delayed MAX is looking like a godsend right now! No payments to make and since we’ve slowed our growth in the last two years, we have only minor scheduling cuts to make at the moment.
