That’s precisely my point. This process CAN (and is required) to lead to an impasse, cooling, and strike. So why would they have filed first? If the goal is drag out as long as possible, why not let the direct negotiations continue until ALPA gets fed up and files for mediation? They could have dragged this out for even more time. I don’t recall the union saying they were going to file for NMB negotiations. In fact, it sounded like they were caught off guard and surprised the company filed.

If you get bumped, either by company reductions or a senior pilot, then you can bump anyone anywhere if they're junior to you.
If you really want something, better grab it at the first available opening... otherwise there may not be another opening for a while, possibly a long while.

Yes. At any US airline I know of, you cannot arbitrarily bump a junior person out of seat/equipment/base any time you want just because you're senior. Not fair to someone who moves to base, buys a house, establishes wife and kids in job/schools, etc.

I miss my regional where there were monthly position bids and they wouldn't put new hires in senior bases. Why don't majors have that? Just because they're bigger isn't a good reason, it makes them a lot less flexible having only two bids a year. Yes I'm going to look for that other forum

Heard a SWA newhire class was supposed to have 40, only 11 showed up. These problems are spreading to everyone except the big 3.
