Alaska Air Hiring
#7332
Anyone else remember when you had to sit at a typewriter and fill out multiple pages of airline apps hoping not to make a typing error? Then spend money to mail them off to airlines all over the globe? Then you would NEVER hear a peep out of any of them? I once got an interview on an app I had mailed out 2 and a half YEARS earlier. I had not heard squat from them in the 2 1/2 years prior. Yes I’m old and slightly peeved at how easy it is now.

Figure out what works for you. Try and speak with a pilot at both airlines or better yet more than one pilot at each airline. It's hard to get to know the financials and pilot contracts at multiple airlines. Once you have a solid understanding decide what is best for you and your family.

Try to get some insight on base seniority... not just to get into the base, but how senior it is moving up through the ranks. Some bases can be easy to get into, and maybe have OK progression as an FO but you hit a brick wall for upgrade. Variety of reasons, such if a base is a nice place to live but expensive, junior FO's may not want to be there but CA's can afford it.
Consider likely growth... historically SW has beat AS on that count.
If you live in base, the trip construction doesn't matter that much but at SWA you're going to be doing either am or pm, and usually lots of legs (and get paid more to do it). At AS there are some cush schedules with some seniority... some folks like QOL on the road, 24-30+ hour layovers in resort destinations, others prefer to work hard at work and be home more.
All else being equal I'd take SWA.

SWA has better growth, good retirements, better pay and retirement, and more days off for both lineholders and reserves... Seems like an easy decision to me. I'm at Alaska, and I enjoy it, but my schedule and W-2 at the end of the year pales in comparison to my friends who have been at SWA for the same amount of time.
