Our current bid (nov) has:
20 Md-80 FO vacancies (10 SFB/10 VBD)
14 Airbus FO vacancies
6 757 FO vacancies (LAS)
14 MD-80 CA (VBD)
12 AB CA (VBD)
Based on the current status of each fleet's training program and sim availability I would not expect any airbus in the NOV class.
There will also be additional need for more -80's in December or possibly January.

New hires bid with the rest of the pilots for vacancies but typically there's a set number of any given fleet for any given class. Bids open around the 6th and close the 20th of each month as per our CBA.

The AB slots are a mix between FLL, PIT, PIE, OAK. If Sfb isn't available in class, VBD (virtual base domicile) would be a good option if available until he can hold Sfb. Vbd is like TDY, company paid hotel and transportation between whatever base they need you at and home. Vacancy bids are posted every month and he could potential hold Sfb before training is complete. Welcome aboard!

Just know that there is a good chance that he might not get the AB. There are probably going to be more MD80 openings than AB in the next few classes. Even thought it is going by SSN, the AB will probably end up going to the older guys in class based on the SSN.

The SS number has nothing to do with age since it is the last four digits, but your caution is still valid.

Plan on an 80-100 day footprint in training, especially if he gets AB. More senior pilots less, less senior pilots more. That's what it's currently running. Training here is exhaustive, that's no joke. He needs to be prepared to put out a lot of effort and self study, and don't expect to make it home much.

The last 4 digits are consecutively assigned. So if someone got their SSN earlier (i.e. they are older), their number will likely be lower, and therefore more senior. Obviously this also depends on location which makes up part of the other numbers.

If our SS numbers were only 4 digits long, your logic would make sense. However, since they are the last four digits of a 9 digit number this logic does not apply. There is absolutely no correlation in my class between age and last four of the SS number.

You cannot be serious. Sure, they're sequential. The first 3 numbers identify the area office which issues it. Then the two middle numbers AND the last 4 are sequential. When XX-9999 is issued, the middle number rolls up one, the the last 4 start over. I'm middle aged and have a very low last 4. I'm senior to many people in my class who are older than me. Your SS# has NOTHING to do with your age. That's why they use this method! Not discriminatory.
