Default Does leaving PSA after 6mo hurt AA chances?

I’ve been at PSA for 6 months and commuting from BOS to DCA. If I leave PSA for Republic for better QOL/no commute, does that hurt my chances at getting on with American later on? I’m a military guy, with a degree, charity work, and assume I’ll have the 121 hours required. I’m wondering how much it would negatively impact my chances of I leave PSA so quickly?

I wouldn't sweat it at all. When you get interview at AA which based on your stats, pretty much inevitable, they may ask. Just explain the commute and QOL change at RAH, but you really enjoyed the time and opportunity at PSA. Something like that. This won't hurt you. Good luck!

What if Republic closes the BOS base after you go through all that? Quitting and going through all the training again?
I would stick it out at PSA. Your time at a regional will probably be brief in this market with your background.

And yes it does not look good to change jobs in 6 months. The less explaining you have to do in an interview (with a major) the better.

Any job of less than 12 months, or leaving a flying job while you are on probation, does not look great.

AA has been hiring mostly from their WO regionals outside of the flow in 2020. There are only a couple of outside regional hires, but almost 20 from PSA/PDT/Envoy so far in the first 4 classes of the year.

if you were a military pilot with 500-1000 hours turbine PIC time, you should stay at PSA; within 300-400 hours of currency you should be competetive for a interview invite.

Anyone else: moving from one regional to another is only excusable if it is to be home-based. You are giving up seniority, schedule advantage, and going into jeopardy events. Go wherever you can get 1000 hours multi-turbine PIC the fastest, then get hired at a major/legacy.

I left Eagle after 9 months back in 2005 for another regional. I left cause Eagle was not a good place to work and treated people like crap (still is/do....gotta love traditions). Anyway, after the remainder of the “lost decade” of aviation, in 2013, I finally started getting interviews at mainline carriers. Guess what, it never even came up. I was ready to answer it, but it wasn’t even mentioned. I took a risk years ago, and if I hadn’t, and listened to all the naysayers and the “no major will ever hire you” people, and stayed at Eagle and just waited to flow.....I’d be 3 years junior to where I am right now at AA. My classmates from my Fall of 2004 class at Eagle are 3 years junior to me.

If the OP is gonna do it, do it now. Not something to slow play, and something you better be confident about doing.

The only things you need to consider are:
1. Did you break a contract of employment (ex: new hire signing bonus term or training contract)
2. Did you give at least 2 weeks notice?

If No and Yes will be your respective answers, you’ll be just fine. If either of those are not those answers, your SS number will become listed in the “blocked to hire” list, and your chances of hire at AA drops to just about zero.

If your end game is AA I would stay put, become a check airman and apply off the street while having the flow in your back pocket.

If AA isn't your end game then move on, leaving after 6 months isn't going to hurt you getting hired at a major airline. If you want AA you are just making your chances harder because of the odds of getting hired off the street vs flow.

These types of question always make me wonder....why not choose Brand X to begin with?
Personal opinion: finish at least your first year.

BOS to DCA should have a ton of flights available on mainline metal, and BOS to CLT has a lot of flights plus a much larger pool of flying to take advantage of once you have some more seniority.

And AA has shown a bias towards hiring from their own wholly owned carriers, as well as military trained pilots. I’d strongly consider staying put.

Additionally, historically Republic has shown a willingness to open and close bases with little to no notice, although I’ll admit that opinion could be a little dated.

If I were you, apply at AA, apply to JetBlue, and consider your options when they present themselves.
