Pilots too. Every airline has a few of those people with multiple training failures, poor decision making, etc. The chief pilot office at every airline spend a bunch of their time dealing with a very small number of the same offenders, over and over. It could be argued that just as the teachers and police unions keep bad apples employed, our unions do the same for poor pilots.

I nod, and then see one of our FAs looking really confused. Brow all scrunched up as she's like "Huh?" Seeing where this was about to go, I said "Bureau of Land Management. Not Black Lives Matter." And she of course says "Bureau of what? Ok well wow I knew BLM was popular but I didn't know they owned land and stuff."
Sigh

True story, kid you not...in the van the other day at a relatively rural outstation the van driver and I got to talking about good hiking trails in the area. He gestures towards some faraway hills and says "That's all BLM land over there."

I'm also a former LEO and I pay attention too. Not sure where you worked or what PBA you belonged to but I've never seen a cop commit murder and keep his/her job. Then again, I've never seen a cop commit actual murder in the line of duty. Murder is a stepped charge, 1st generally requires malice aforethought and none of them are covered under QI. Anywhere. Period. If I'm wrong, prove it. QI only protects you from using deadly force in the lawful commission of your duties to prevent loss of your life, the life of another officer or the life of a civilian. I'm not claiming that an oversight board resolves those issues but I AM claiming that it increases transparency in the process and gives the community a greater say in what happens with bad cops and by extension greater ability to track patterns of wrongdoing. The law is an imperfect thing and so are the policies that govern those who enforce it. Is there room for improvement on both fronts? Absolutely. And we should take this time to do exactly that but to claim that police unions protect murderers or that the greater body of law enforcement in America is made up of murders is simply wrong in every way it can be wrong. The taking of human life is ugly and a hideous thing for everyone involved and it should never be done lightly or not thoroughly investigated in the aftermath and bad actors held accountable if discovered. But it does happen with reason on rare occasion. When it does we need to be less hyperbolic about the why and more introspective of the reasons behind the action, working to mitigate those reasons in the aftermath.

we will just have to disagree. Most don’t understand the legal difference between murder and other wrongful death charges so I wasn’t parsing words to be explicit or accurate in that vain. I was not in a union as a LEO. We had lots of transparency and accountability at our department. Just because you and I did not personally see the things I referred to doesn’t mean they don’t happen. If you were actually paying attention you would be aware just as I am.

Seriously, when I was in college I vacationed at the Grand Canyon. Bus Driver/Tour Guide was telling everyone about the history, as they were eating lunch. I tagged on at the end, “The one thing he forgot to tell you. The folks back in Washington made a serious mistake. They gave this to the wrong agency. They gave it to the Department of the Interior. See, if they had given it to the Department of Agriculture, this bad erosion problem would have never happened.”🤪
