Exactly. Why is the concept of different requirements for different matters so hard to grasp?
I think of it as the difference of passing a law through congress vs. a constitutional amendment. One should rightly be harder than the other.
You may think ALPA is vastly better than APA, but to claim a presidential election occurring every three years should have the same standard as a once-in-a-career union vote is disingenuous in my opinion.

The details of what it requires to leave ALPA. As I understand it there is no voting provision, but would require a card drive, which means 50% +1 (currently our standard to join ALPA).
As far as “going sideways” I don’t think it takes too much imagination to think of a scenario 5-10 years down the road where ALPA national created a policy that pilots at AA dislike.

It's 50+1 to leave ALPA because it is a card drive. It's needed so the NLRB doesn't waste its time over viewing the process. Once the process is started, it is simply a majority vote needed. This isn't voting to leave APA. This isn't a card drive. This is merging with ALPA. Different process and rules.
You believe independence is an advantage? Campaign on that. Apathy shouldn't be a protection strategy when people don't give a crap to pay attention so much we keep on getting questions from people who have been here for 6+ years whether Christmas will pay holiday pay every single freaking year.

One could argue we’re lucky it’s not that way at APA and they at least allow any vote at all on a merger.
this is all theoretical anyway. If ALPA puts forth an awesome deal it won’t be close. Months of roadshows and education campaigns will bring out the vote. It’s nothing like a presidential election.
I support keeping the bar high to motivate ALPA to give us the best deal possible. Yall are crazy to argue we should be lowering voting threshold in the middle of negotiations.

That’s something to talk and campaign on. It’s hard to separate if you have remorse. But to setup a merger like it’s a card drive is protectionist BS when you’re lucky 25% even participates in surveys and elections.
Hear all the time how contract needs A,B or C. Have they sent sound offs, participated in the surveys? Nope. Didn’t even say they didn’t due to the obvious wording to get APA’s desired result, just didn’t. A lot claim they didn’t know, but given APA spammed it out via multiple avenues, only way they didn’t know is they simply ignored it.

It will take 90 seconds to log in and vote electronically on ALPA or APA.
If a pilot can't take 90 seconds to engage in a democratic vote of their union, then they really don't care which union represents them.
To have APA rig the vote so that a non-voter is in favor of APA, is just disGustin.
There is a sector of the AA pilot group that doesn't care which union represents them, as long as their paycheck cashes. If they don't vote, why should APA vote for them?
