Whoa there......now you've opened up a can of worms. Cacti has a laundry list of problems that he would loooooove to tell you about. Don't worry TQ, Cacti is just ****ed off at the world. When told about the new scheduling system where he only had to work 4 days a month, Cacti responded, "4 days EVERY month?!?!"
I'm pretty sure that all west pilots aren't like Cactiboss. Pretty sure he is the 5%.

I'm sorry, my reply to your initial post was a bit jerky. In all honesty, I completely agree with your post but have been through a couple of mergers now. The "best practice" mantra was how we approached it but the implementation was messed up. As a forever optimist, I share the same hope as you. Cheers.

Having no other airline to compare it to, I guess I'm not seeing what the huge issue is. PA's? Who cares? If the CA wants to make all the PA's, he's welcome to it.
Engine starts? Turn a stupid rotary switch. Again, who cares who does it, so long as it's done properly.
Other than that, you swap legs and generally have a good time.
The WX thing for landing is changing, from what I heard... it's in the pipeline. Since I'm in a transition class right now, I'll ask them at the schoolhouse and see what I can find.

I've never been in an AA cockpit so I can't speak to the checklist.
Most things will fall into the really doesn't matter category.

I don't think that anyone here mentioned we DO have flows. Before start, after start, after takeoff, etc. Then we use the challenge/response checklist to confirm the flows were done.
PAs: again, who cares? The ONLY PA that needs to change to the FO is the Prepare PA. Very dumb idea for the CA to taxi & talk at the same time. All others don't matter, let the CA do 'em since he makes the big $$$.

True to a certain extent. AA is still stuck in the 1950s.
All engine starts are CAs (referring to start switches.) FO puts up the fuel levers.
PAs- AA is VERY old school. Only PA the FO makes is the gate arrival PA (totally worthless.) even "FAs Prepare for Takeoff" is made by the CA -WHILE TAXIING!
Approaches: CA must land the aircraft if visibility is less than 1/4sm or 4000RVR.
Please USAir help make some changes!

Unless you are based in STL and then FO's start the engine when the CA is taxing. Also in STL the FO pulls up the paperwork and makes most of the decisions on his leg unless the CA needs to add input. Typically FO's in STL do all PA's during their flying leg.
