What's life like on the 76 nowadays? Are those bids typically 17 days as well or more broken up?
On the 74 side (and 76 for that matter) how likely is it to get forced to stay out longer than 17 days with them being so short handed?

Unless you are on a reserve line you cannot be involuntarily extended. If you are on a reserve line you can be involuntarily extended but only to "protect the operation". In other words, to complete the assigned trip. You cannot be extended into another pairing other than the one which you are already flying.

Most of the 767 flying is broken up. I think I saw just a couple of straight 17day lines on this last bid. Lots of 60 day lines as well.
You wouldn't want to be a loadmaster, anyway - those guys get used and abused. It's standard to have loadmasters or PSRs who hadn't been off the jet in days on the pax 767s. They "bathe" by using the lav sinks or, when they're really lucky, using the potable water drain under the tail.

I would second CaptainV. Avoiding a pilot job and taking a non-pilot job in hopes of getting a pilot job would decidedly not be the better way.

I wouldn't worry about it too much yet. I took my test in early July, didn't get the phone interview until August 12th, and only received the invite to interview in Miami on October 7th this week. Some were called right away from my grouping too, others weren't. I just kept updating my resume with them and indicating my interest. Eventually I was given a shot. Good luck!

You're either a pilot or you're not, when you muddy the waters you only hurt yourself in the long run, the days of working your way up from the ramp are long gone.
