One thing I've found very handy is a little power strip. Some rooms only have a couple outlets or if you're having to use an adapter you can plug three or four chargers into one outlet..

For electronics that use USB to charge you'll want one that's at least 4.

1. Company "phone"/PCD
2. Company iPad
3. Personal iPad
4. Anything else you want to charge.

I purchased a 4 input USB in Hong Kong for about $17 that came with all the international adapters. It has 2 2.1amp inputs for the iPads and 2 for other items. In my previous job I needed a laptop, but since I've been here (almost 3 yrs) I've just travelled with my iPad. I really didn't see a need for a laptop. Some folks like the laptop others don't. I used to carry the large LW bag but have since reduced my bag to the smaller one. I got tired of carrying crap I didn't need. My shoulder is better for it. Just pack lots of underwear and socks, a bathing suit, and 1 or 2 Landry detergents. You'll be fine.

Yellow fever is required, and is only good for 10 years (though my understanding is that this is a point of debate in the medical field).

Polio, measles, Hep A and DT should be current.

The secondary list is Typhoid, Hep B, Cholera, Varicella, Japanese Encephalitis and Influenza.

Over 50 they recommend Meningococcal and Pneumococcal, though my doc recommended them back when I was 38.

A related issue is insect repellent. You can get Deet wipes at a sporting goods store in season or off of Amazon anytime. Buy a pack and throw them in the bottom of your bag -- you never know where you are going to end up.

If you live in the sticks and don't have a travel clinic nearby the next stop is an infectious disease doc, which will be expensive. Which brings us back to the company credit card. But a newhire will have plenty of time in MIA to sort this, and lots of docs who know the score.

Any headset recommendations for the 747? No idea how loud the various models are. I've got Bose, Clarity Aloft, and a crappy pair of Telex 750 at home, which would work best?

Just buy the $20 a month T-Mobile data plan. Unlimited worldwide (1 Gig US). Put the sim card they send you in a old phone or swap it with your current phone when you leave the US.

The Clarity Aloft (with custom ear buds) works very nicely for me.

However, I am biased as I don't like wearing any over the ear headsets for more than an hour or so.

How did you get custom ear buds for the Clarity Aloft? I didn't know they made custom molded ear buds.
