Has anyone on here with Atlas seen or read any projections for hiring/growth next year (2011)??? I know it can change from month to month, but I have not been able to fine any info. Thanks for the help.

Waldo11 08-31-2010 09:42 AM

Navy guys need not apply.....

Kidding but I disagree with the signature ;)

I've heard continued growth due to more aircraft coming on property and we have a fairly senior pilot group. But as you said things can change....

Sunny1 08-31-2010 10:39 AM

Thanks Waldo. I'll keep updating monthly and see what happens. The story behind the signature is I am in a joint squadron of Navy, Air Force and Marine pilots, and it's the signature I use on my emails at work. It's all in good fun as it provokes a lot of thoughtful responses.

Would buying a B744 type rating help?

Cubdrick 08-31-2010 11:35 AM

FWIW....

I just received a call today from Atlas HR regarding my interest. Unfortunately I declined at this time due to other employment obligations and opportunities.

Background:

-sent in resume April 2010
-just left AD Navy
-ATP / 737 type (no experience)
~2000 hours (mostly Jet PIC, EA-6B, F/A-18)

- ZERO internal references
- ZERO "heavy" / cargo experience

Keep the faith!

So what better deal do you have?

BTW- maybe I should buy a B737 type!

After leaving AD I started a Reserve gig with the Navy flying C-9s and just finished my training a few weeks ago and will be going in that direction.

For me the 737 was part of a ATP/737 package deal. I only flew TACAIR in the Navy and I wanted to get a feel for "big wing" flying before I committed to leaving AD for airline/cargo flying.

Good luck in your pursuit of Atlas, they sound like a nice place to call "home."

Hi!

Latest is next class in Oct, and then starting up again in Jan, one class every 3 weeks....
Also heard just got an ex-UAL airframe for dedicated PAX flying.

Sunny1 08-31-2010 09:44 PM

Thanks for the info Cub. I'm encouraged by your info. For me it's a matter of timing when I leave active duty next year. What VR squadron are you in?

bmxandjets 08-31-2010 11:37 PM

Got a phone call out of the blue last week, phone interview, did Tech test online a couple days later. We'll see what happens. Applied back in April.

Wouldn't count on the UAL frame...they ran PW's, Atlas likes the commonality of CF6's.

Not that they can't be changed, but the cost is high and there are some better frames out there already powered with the GE's.

For the cost of bringing a UAL frame up to spec, they can pick up a 400 with a fresh D and nice motors for about 15M.

Curious Rhinoflyer, Did you get the call last week? When did you apply?

I applied July 8th and got the call Thursday. I have a friend of a friend at the company.

Thanks guys for the advice on the test, it was a tough one. As far as I could tell I got a 65, although I'm not sure how you get a 65 on a 50 question test.

Now I sit and wait.

Moondog 09-04-2010 05:52 PM

Rhino, check PM.

Checked, thanks. It turns out I scored a 76.

AIRLIFTR 09-04-2010 09:23 PM

You're in good shape, that's pretty high on the bell curve. 2 of my buds got hired with lower scores.

Must of been the above advise that had the greatest impact on Rhino's success!!!!!

Seriously CONGRATS!!!! That test is tuff!!!!

cargo

bikingflyer 09-05-2010 06:43 AM

So how does one figure out the score? What is the next step in the process, assuming they like the tech score, do they call or send a letter for the interview....just need help and more info if anyone can help!!

Thanks!

cargowannabe 09-05-2010 08:28 AM

Next step is to wait for the call to set up the interview in Miami.

cargo

No way I would have passed that test sober. :D

Moondog 09-05-2010 10:19 AM

65% is what you need to pass. If you want to know what you made: Log back in, and follow the directions like you are going to take the test. The icon by the test will be blue and have a red checkmark in the upper right corner. If you over your mouse over it, it will read properties. Click on that and your score will show up on the right side of that page. At least that's what I did and there was a score there, so I figured it was my score. Good luck!!

bikingflyer 09-05-2010 04:14 PM

Thanks for the help. I'll get in the line for the call.....I hope....

Atlas Hiring

Are they hiring anyone without any cargo, wide-body and International long haul experience?

Also what are the trips like? Are you gone for 7 days at a time or do you get to get home every few days?

Thanks

bikingflyer 09-06-2010 06:57 AM

Anyone have a recent interview experience to that they can share with us?

I'm a long way from being hired, but did get to do the online tech test and have only Mil Fighter experience.

Twin Wasp 09-06-2010 07:35 AM

Seven days, hah! You're on the hook for 17 days a month. If you live in ANC, MIA or JFK and can swing it, you might get some less than a week lines. MIA especially does a bunch of down and back. But they are very up front in the interview, they run planes around the world and you should plan on being gone 17 days a month. You might be able to split that into 2 patterns. But if you're junior and end up working the later part of one month and get the first part of the next month, well you could be on the road a while. Getting home from Denver for a couple days is one thing, getting back from Hong Kong is totally different. Twenty four hours of deadheading to get home, I only want to do that once a month.

All that being said, I've only been on the road 14 days the last couple of months but I do that in one chunk.

What's your seniority? I can handle 17 days in one "pattern" (I actually prefer it), but am curious what kind of respect the pilots get from the company with regard to getting extended? I don't care if you're single or in a relationship and have children, getting extended for up to 40+ days is hard on one's lifestyle and can make an otherwise good job a stepping stone. Thank you.

Beagle_Lover 09-06-2010 12:43 PM

STN used to be a base for new hires and the only way to get the company to pay for your ticket and hotel was to waive your right to two days off between trips and agree to 17 working days in a row.

Today you can still agree to the waiver and 17 days in a row but it is up to crew planning if they will award it to you or not. The two most likely scenarios for you to be working more than 17 days in a row is first working the monthly transition and second is involuntary extension. The latter can only be up to four days under certain conditions. It's up to you to ask why or just roll over and assume it's ok. Anything more than four days is pilot induced.

The Polar/Atlas contract is now going to an arbitrator and hopefully it will be in effect by spring '11.

Twin Wasp 09-06-2010 01:23 PM

I'm real junior, was hired just before they stopped hirring in 08. The comments were mainly for Avien, if you're looking for a three on, four off, four on, three off job, Atlas is not for you. I've not had two months run together and never been extended. In fact the company spent about my month's pay to get me home without going into 18 days for this month.

Avien 09-06-2010 05:43 PM

Atlas sounds like a great opportunity. Unfortunately, I have very young kids and I can't be away for 17 days at a time for that very reason. Thanks for the information. Perhaps in a couple of years if they are still hiring.

Avien 09-06-2010 05:59 PM

Does anyone know if Dave Kilian is still with Polar/Atlas (B747CA)? We flew together 21 years ago!

IfitsTuesday 09-06-2010 06:41 PM

I logged back in and no courses were listed. I took the test a few weeks ago. Has anyone else had that happen?

Atlas Shrugged 09-06-2010 08:17 PM

I have been with the company for about 2.5 years, including furlough, and I have never been backed to backed. I can tell you that you will spend at least 1 or 2 days of month traveling on your own time if you do not live near your base. It is a fact of life here. You will also spend an enormous amount of time dead heading. I went LAX-JFK-DXB to start work this month...

Pattern changes are the norm, not the exception. Save yourself a lot of grief and remain semper gumby, and don't let gossip get you down, etc.

I have requested 17 days straight every month this year to no avail....
