Advice?

My name is Matt. I live in Inidana and am 23. I graduatated from a university with an associates in Aviation and a BAS in Managment. I have Comm Airplane Inst. MEL and SEL and CFI-I Ive been instructing for about a year now. There were not enough students to keep me on staff. I am now unemployed and cant seem to find even an instructing job.
I would like to move on the regionals some time but Im not sure what my next step should be. I dont have the multi time they want. I only have 12hrs. Im also not familiar with the airline enviroment. I graduated from a 141 course.. Do you have any suggestions. I could really use some advice. Unfortunatly I do not know many pilots.

Also - when you meet the 135 minimums look at applying for 135 cargo operators - they will hire with less multi time and you build valuable experience quickly. After a while flying Navajos, you should be very competitive with the regionals if they are hiring!
Good luck!

This career is not worth it anymore, just ask any 50 year old regional pilot. Or ask any furloughed pilot, or one of several thousand pilots who have been furloughed more than 2 times and are forced to start back over at a regional airline as a first officer making $20 an hour and have to figure out a way to still pay the family bills, because for them it is too late in their life to make a career change. The good news is you are young enough to find a different career. It's unfortunate that the truth has to be this negative, but it is what it is.

1. Kill yourself.
2. Get some time and wait out the glut of pilots.
Just joking. Well, maybe.
Personally I would recommend that a person your age should go into a more profitable industry. God knows I would if I were not too old to start over. Be a doctor or lawyer for God's sake. Dont waste your life on this career.

In 3 years, MANY pilots will be turning 65. I think starting in 2013(sounds like a long time but it's not since I'm old). But, lots of guys will get out of the career too, so although there won't be a pilot shortage, it may become manageable. Lots of avenues to go too--Sim instruct, etc. Just stay with it and realize you may not make a ton of money, but you may make a ton of money. You're young, so that's a big plus. By the time u have your 1200tt, 200 multi, the regionals may be hiring. Then you can decide on fractionals, etc. Things will turn ariound. Back in the day there were guys on furlough with Pan Am for 15 years. This is the worst economy, I really would hope it doesn't stay like this. It won't.

Those instructors at All ATPs seem to get a lot of multi time.
If you get your MEI there and impress them, perhaps they would let you instruct there.
You may have to relocate, but they have them all over the country.
ATP Flight School: Airline Pilot Training & Pilot Career Development
Good luck. This career isn't for the faint of heart. You need to really love flying airplanes, because chances are slim that you'll ever get rich doing it.
As my accountant turned aspiring airline pilot friend once said, "Being an accountant is a lousy job, but a great career. Being an airline pilot is a great job, but a lousy career."

A family friend of ours is a Pediatrician. She left to stay home with the kids for a few years. Now she wants back in and there are few jobs available. They pay about $95 per hour to be part of a multi-Doctor practice. I only make $10 /per hr less than her, right seat. I also sit reserve from home and work an average of 1-2 days a week with full $75 /hr guarantee. There are success stories in aviation, although I was on furlough for 4 years from 2002-2006! I still love it though---

thanks for the advice
Lots of opinions. Thank you all for your time and your advice. It gives me alot to consider and to think about.
Im leaning toward a career change. Im just not sure what yet.
It seems the industry is having alot of difficulty and troubles.
Maybe a fresh mind in mangament will help.
I like the aviation feild so Im going to try and stay in it. But I dont necessarily have to be a career pilot.
Thanks

FlightSafety is hiring somewhere close to 30 instructors from what I've heard. Min req's are to be able to fill out an application
They'll love you even more if you've got at least 500TT/200 Dual Given so you can get into one of the many foreign contract programs (which are actaully pretty good)
I think they're hiring part time starting off, then move you to full time with benefits and such after a month or two "trial period"
PM if you're interested, and I can send you some info.
