Deuce130,
Ask the passengers of that Gulfstream with the gear problem out west today if their pilots are "Heros" Since the bosses were the ones on the plane, dont you think they are happy that they spent alot of money making sure they had the best pilots they could have in the cockpit so if an emergency came up they would be able to save their asses. How much do think those pilots are worth to their bosses after today???
I had a situation once on one of my flights where we had a catastophic loss of an engine with lots of passengers in the back. People in the back screaming and crying, praying, you name it... I put her down SE at Love field, and got everyone off with no injuries. The people on my flight that day thought I was a "Hero" too, but I figured I was just doing my job.
Its funny how people at UPS feel its only OK for Sr managment and VP's to make good money, Well, here is a news flash for you, being a pilot at UPS which is considered a "Major Airline pilot" level usually means your going to make good money, its not like being a line supervisor, or a Ramp supervisor. I know UPS does a really good job at setting everyone against the pilots. I try to be nice to everyone, Ive been told that the supervisors are telling the box throwers not to talk to the pilots. What kind of **** is that???
We negotiate our contract every 5-8 years and thats a fact of life, we get what we negotiate and the company will (in the end) give us what they feel we are worth... Go to www.airlinepilotcentral.com and look at Netjets pay scale, there a fractional operation, and they top our pay, thats embarrassing. You made a choice in your life to do what it is that you do, I did too, Im a pilot. I dont need to try to impress you or justify to you why it is that I want what I want for doing what it is that I do. Have I asked you what you make an hour? No, I dont care, if you are in a union and you can Neg $500.00 an hour, go for it.
If you dont like the pilots asking for the salary that we think we deserve, thats too bad, and you can learn to deal with it, and if you cant,
I suggest you take up flying lessons and learn how to fly, spend (approx $50,000-$100,000 dollars) and the next 10-15 years of your life getting qualified to work here and then Maybe, just maybe if the moon and the stars align, you might get an interview and then maybe get hired and then you can comment to me on how much we should make...

Don't need the interview, already have a job with your main competitor. Yes, I'm a pilot, yes I'm military, yes, I'm in a union, yes, I've had many engine failures, yes, yes, yes. I'm on board with pilots making as much money as humanly possible - the future of me and my family depend on it. My main point was that I felt that the defense of pilot salaries in those posts weren't good ones. That kind of talk doesn't inspire others to back us in our quest for better pay. Pounding on our chests and saying we deserve it works in the hangar and in the AOC, but doesn't come across well when talking to the general public or responding to a post from a ground pounder.

Sorry I took your quote out of context. I guess I was still shaking my head from the previous post and yours got caught in the crossfire. Sorry. And for what it's worth, I think you're hero for doing what you've done, as are all the guys who've served.

Thanks Duece130!
This thread reminds me of a converasation I had with an UPS manager back in 97. He said I was making more than He was and He was at UPS for 18 years, (I was in my 4th) Instead of taking the normal tack in these conversations I turned the tables on him and told him that we were hiring and He should apply. I told him with 18 years under his belt He's sure to get an interview, and I'd even write a rec letter for him! He stood there dumbfounded. Of course the guy had zero hours and didn't know what to say. Next night He's on my jet (He was overseeing the opening of a new facility) We were on final when we got "schwacked in some wake turbies from a DC-8 and we went for a little "ride" It was no big deal, but it really shook him up! after we shut down He asked me what happened and He said "I wouldn't do your job for a million bucks!"

In short, dude, it's because not everyone can do it, dude. If any dude could just walk in off the street tomorrow and do our jobs then we could all be fired tomorrow and replaced, dude. Unfortunately, dude, Fred can't just hire 4600 pilots tomorrow, dude. If flying airplanes was like driving a delivery truck, then we'd all get paid alot less, dude. About 10 years to train a qualified pilot capable of worldwide travel on big jets who can handle all the contingencies that pop up, dude. About two days to train a truck driver. Simple, dude. And things are pretty good over here, as they are over there I hear.

Trying to imply that most of UPS management pilots are underqualified and were hired as replacement workers just shows your stupidity. Show me some proof of your claims that only 10% of us actually do a good job. I have been in this industry since the late 70's and I have watched ALPA along with other mangers allow several great airlines to simply dissolve. That will not happen here at UPS. We all hope that the IPA and UPS can negotiate a fair contract. Calling everyone names and making false claims is of no help. People like you are part of the attitude problem between mangers and line pilots. Grow up and find some way to be positive about your job and company!!!

You were hired as a replacement worker in the event of a strike. You probably don't even know the truth of that. 10% of you actually do a good job. A worthy job. The rest of you little indians just run around, trying to justify your existence until strike time. Then you can boldy step on our necks as you cross the picket line. Proclaiming your goodness and righteousness.
Well done you moron.
Leave it to a UPS manager to talk about UPS pilots wives and their legs, then turn around and berate a UPS line guy for, "veiled profanity". Typical unbelievable UPS management ethical duality.
