Think of the UPS Mgt job as an unknown. You'd probably like it here and make tons of money and be home a lot. But you have a sure thing already. Why risk one of the best jobs anywhere for what COULD or COULD NOT be a great job? There are a lot of 6 year NWA guys looking for work now, let them take the UPS Mgt jobs.

If you were on the street looking for a job and the UPS Mgt position was your only offer, I would say go for it for obvious reasons. However I would never leave a secure stable flying job to join our Mgt team.

In short, UPS' mentality is to maintain an advesarial relationship with labor. Is this slowly getting better with time and success?........No.

Think Southwest, now think the total opposite and thus you have UPS.

Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful for my job and I like my company, I just don't have in misgivings about my company.

why does UPS need to go outside the company for management pilots?

Im very curious about UPS CAPT. His responses are VERY different from any other "line Capt" that I know. I thought I knew who it was, but judging from the responses Ive seen on some of the thread, I think there is a mole in the house...

I Can Understand Why You Are So Suspicious. It Is Just That Us Line Pilots Complain About Management, Rarely Offer Constructive Advice To Fix Perceived Problems, And Say That They "would Not Touch That Job With A Ten Foot Pole". Well, Someone Has To Do It And The Group At Ups Does A Pretty Damn Good Job At It. All Is Not Well At Ups, But The Average Line Pilot And Average Manager Is Pretty Happy

Default Mole, Again

You Know, The "bar And Grill" Is A Haven For Us Line Pilots. Who Ever Said That This Forum Is A Haven For Line Guys! There Are Other Constructive Opinions Out There. Also, I Know A Ups Manager Who Got Access To The "bar And Grill" Through A Line Guy. So Don't Think That "our Own Forum" Is So Air Tight!

Being an outsider looking in, I still don't understand why there is this adversarial relationship with line guys vs. mgmt. Every airline has Chief Pilots, Asst Chief Pilot, Check Airmen, and Sim/Ground School Instructors. Yet there aren't many airlines where those groups of people are disliked. There may be a bad apple here or there, but for the most part they're just a necessary part of the flying business. UPS chooses to label these guys as "Management Pilots" so all of the sudden, the line pilots tell everybody to stay away from this job. (I get that not just from this thread, it seems to be the general consensus from those I've talked to)

I'm also considering the Mgmt Pilot gig, but it's hard to make a decision when I feel I'm going to be ostracized because of my title, and not for who I am.

BTW ... thanks for all the professional responses so far. Much better than some of the flame on other boards.

Right. And at all of those other companies, the Chief Pilots, Asst Chief Pilot, Check Airmen, and Sim/Ground School Instructors are union, seniority holding pilots who can quit their management position whenever they like and come back to the line. Not so at UPS. These guys (with the exception of IPA sim instructors) are all separate management pilots. They will fly if we strike and they cannot come to (or back to) the line.

At every other airline I've been with, all of the "management" pilots had the best interest of the line pilots at heart. At UPS, management pilots represent the company first.

As you said, your view is that of an outsider looking in. Things are very different on the inside. It’s unfortunate, but that’s the way it is here.

That Is Exactly The Point. The Management Pilot Cannot Go Back To The Line, If They Have A Bad Day Or Get ****ed. They Are Committed To The Company And Have Its Interest At Heart. From That Flows The Best Interest Of The Line Pilot. If The Best Interests Of The Line Pilot Were At The Forefront All The Time, Then The Company Would Suffer, Like All The Other Airlines; Except Southwest Which Has Thrived, Even In These Rough Times.

Default Ups Capt

You don't sound like anyone I have ever flown with or actually would enjoy flying with. You have a sideways view of mgmt pilots; you think they actually do something useful? Why is it that we have so many of them while other airlines with far more pilots have just a handful?

You sound like a line guy that has already gone to the dark side (afraid of the furlough threat??). You can't reclaim being "one of the guys" by posting on a pilot's forum now.
