UPS System Bid 08-101

Captains: 36,079
F/Os: 34,342
S/Os: 1,552
Total: 71,998
72,000 credit hours is about 12,000 days of work per year.
We have 812 lines of reserve, that is 15 days of work per reserve per year.
That is a little over 1 day per reserve per pay period.
Draw you own conclusions.

Most won't be FO's for long. A good portion will be able to hold ANC Capt when we do this all over again in a few months. And so the cycle continues....

Was it a surprise when you got your first paycheck? Lack of financial planning?
Do you realize what it does to our numbers when INDIVIDUALS pick up open time......How many hours were picked up last year, too many? I didnt think you were an all about ME kind of guy. Who cares about other trying to get a job here right?

The same logic applies to someone trying to support a lifestyle beyond their means. Would you not agree that people picking up open time is bad?

Did you not read the part where I said I don't do open or JA flying? How about focusing on the beyond year one guys doing this when they're already making six figure incomes? Not everyone has the financial means to plan for being hired here on the chance they MAY get an offer and then a class date...I was fortunate to have another option without maxing out my credit cards. I'm not throwing spears but rather than say 'don't do this' when they clear <$2500/month, offer these guys a solution.
Never saw anything you said about open time or JA flying. I was just replying to your response. I believe you if you say you dont......I know this is a hot subject. Just look at the stuff on the B&G. When our time comes to change this, first year pay, I WILL do my part.

I think that if you need to pick up open time to pay your bills (after first year pay) is bad.
I think picking up open time during negotiations or when encouraged by the union not to is bad.
I think picking up open time on first year pay is understandable.
I think if a good trip comes up and you want a little extra money for whatever, it's your choice to pick it up and make some extra cash. I think it's unreasonable to expect someone to NEVER pick up an open time trip here and there.
If I was to lose my job right now and I had to go somewhere and make $33K this year, I would be majorly SCREWED financially and I do not live beyond my means. I have savings, a baby due soon and another career to fall back on but I would still be in deep money doo doo real quick! I don't think it's fair to say someone coming to UPS that needs supplemental income the first year has lacked in financial planning.

I didn't pick up a whole lot of open time in my first year because at $33/hr an extra trip nets me about $380 a month extra. Didn't make a whole lotta sense for me to commute from Tampa to ANC to do such.
My thanks to the Capts that extended the tradition of dinner on layovers for newhires..THANK YOU. I hope I can repay the favor to future newhires.
