Without another excess bid the 757 might offer quite a few training bump or draft opportunities as the 727 continues to get min BLG schedules. We might not see a widebody FO vacancy bid for 2 years.

Hmmm.....

Higher relative seniority. They already know the airplane. Window heat, pitot heat, when do we eat.

727 FO is a good gig if you have a little seniority. If I was going to be at the bottom of either, the 757 looks more attractive to me.

I also wonder about the next excess bid after this one (I put the odds on that as greater than 50%). If widebody CAs filter down to widebody FO and widebody FOs filter down to 727 FO, it could result in quite a few 727 FOs (or awardees) displaced. That makes 757 FO more attractive to me.
If you can hold widebody FO now, you are likely to be at 30-40% in the 75 and 35-45% in the 72. Not much difference, and the 75 fleet will be growing and the new guys coming in will likely be junior. The guys hanging out in the right of the 72 will do so till the bitter end, meaning stagnation until it goes away.

I agree that the 75 would be a better option, but I also think most guys will think that way, which is why I think more of those who might be displaced would go to it instead of the 72. They might like to stick with a glass or semi glass cockpit as well.

If I were going to get excessed off a widebody seat I would pick the 75, which is why I guess I disagree with the assumption that they will filter down to the 72. Of course I could be wrong, I often am. Hopefully there won't be another excess bid until they need to get rid of some more 72's and all the widebody guys won't have to sweat it.

Maybe so. I know there is some uncertainty on the 757's schedule so that may be a player. Will it be commutable? Will it look like the DC-10 with too many O&B lines?

Considering the probable training nightmare for any money saved, another excess bid may not be very big. May not happen at all.

I am one of these above mentioned widebody guys that will probably get the boot if they excess the 11. Does anyone have an idea what kind of flying the 757 will be doing. I know it is a 72 replacement, but is it going to take some 310 flying? The only routes I have heard was a daytime MEM-IND-MEM and night MEM-DCA-IAD-MEM.

Thanks TSD....I watched the video closely...you're right, it's very clear the ref is wearing a West Point ring!

While I may hang in the back of the 727 despite a 757 award, I'm not sure you'll be holding the same double DH or weekend layover lines as I, with your new found "juniority" in your lovely window seat (...you can kiss those long weekends in YOW with your Canadian girlfriend good-bye.)

Looks like life may be getting a wee bit better for some guys in the back, as over 50 (net) of the more senior guys move off the seniority list.

Of course, with the shrinking bidpack I'm sure we'll fly together before we both leave the 727....and I'll be more than glad to fetch your water bottle or pour your coffee --- special creamer just for you!

A'o Aloha.

I'm certainly not as educated as many others that post on this topic, but you would think at some point they would just have to accept being overloaded in one of the seats. Why excess off the Boeing to WBs just to have an ensuing WB excess that pushes others back to the Boeing? The end result is the same number of people in the same number of seats, just the seniority list is re-arranged. I guess we'll have to see.

You mean my Canadian girlfriend Patty Bolan? (Best Pub in YOW for the unindoctrinated) That's the only girl I go see when I go to the great white north.

Anyway, I'll bring my own coffee when we fly, Thank you. No USAFA special sauce for me!

Yeah, but if you go to the 75 now you WILL be junior, at least for a little while while they train the junior guys underneath you. Few lines, few airplanes = reserve. Homie will never voluntarily sit reserve again.

The plan is to sit in the senior right seat of the Boeing until they make me go, and then it will be to the right seat of the Barbie Jet. Seniority, not money, rules everything.

You may be right. By the time they get to the end of this training letter, the 777 bid will be due.

But I wouldn't be surprised at an excess bid between June 5th and then just to give the company the option of moving folks down if the 777 is delayed or the economy provides more downward surprises.
